So like i guess i didnt tell you guys, heh
Im the proud new owner of a red 93 Trans Am
I picked it up a few days ago. Its of course, a 93. Red. dark leather interior. mint shape. very few things cosmeticly wrong. Has ZR1 style wheels on it with 275s up front and 315s out back Needs new tires bad..anyone have a hookup? It has a moroso CAI, a edelbrock/bbk throttle body, what looks like edelbrock TES headers(they are emissions shortys) and a flowmaster catback. The thing hauls ass, i cant wait to get it to a track. Also the AC blows ice cold buahahaha.
btw anyone know what size rims/tires came stock ona 93 TA?
thanks..
joe
ps the 89 WS6 is for sale in the classifieds section.

Al i have on their now something like 315/35/17 out back and 275/40/17 up front. 315s are sweet but my god expensive. Btw what would the height have to be to keep the speedo correct? With those kinds of tires how off could the speedo be?
thanks..

What Little G put up is good. Yes, 315/35/17 is very expensive. As long as you keep the 26.2 or whatever OD of the tire right, you shouldnt have to touch the speedo.
In all reality, you could just go with 245/275's. Still a LOT of tire, and saves you a lot of cash.
Which tire brand are you most fond of? Man...I sound like Im at work!
I can get pretty much any tire out there, but I always suggest BFG's.
A good set of KDW's would be good for you. Great dry traction as well as some wet.
D- Dry
W- Wet
If this is your all year driver, I suggest KDWS's. I dont know how big you can go with them. Id have to check it out.

in my opinion, the 285-40-17 would be a great alternative to the 315-35-17 for the rear tires. It's only like a quarter inch taller, which doesn't really make a difference, and it's definitely a lot cheaper. there's 3 different kuhmo tires and a BFG tire all under $150 a tire on tirerack.com in 285-40-17. in the 315-35, there's a sumitomo for $156, but the next one up is $243 a tire. I'm not counting the track/competition tires. Additionally if you're driving the car year round, they don't even make an all season tire in 315-35-17 that i can find on tire rack. In the 285-40-17, there are several, including 2 of the 4 models that are sub $150 per tire.
all of the above are true for the 275-40-r17 though too, it's cheap and there are cheap all season tires available, etc. However, the biggest reason i'd go with the 285 vs the 275 in back even though it might cost a little more money is that the rear zr1 style rims are 17x11. the tread width on a 285 is 11.22", while a 275 tire is 10.82". A tire that isn't as wide as the rim it's on not only looks goofy, but doesn't offer the best handling/performance/wear, and doesn't do much to protect the rim either against curb rash damage, etc. we're only talking about 4/10 of an inch here, but i think it's worth the extra insurance and look.
now if your rear rims are only 9 or 9.5 wide and someone shoehorned a wide assed 315 tire on them, i'd probably say go with the 275's all around because you can rotate them and if you have a blowout you can better control where the mini spare goes.

If snow is not a problem, then I highly suggest BFG's Gforce KDW's. There are a LOT Of tire sizes, and they have a great unidirectional tread as well as a reinforced shoulders to give you great traction in turns.
If you show up on the 25th with teh car, ill give you all the info as we just got a crap load of it in at work.
Even though I should not be doing this, tire rack is going to be the cheapest because they dont have to pay people like myself to help you out on your tire purchase.
Pro= Low price, massive selection, online reviews.
Con= Gotta find someone to mount and ballance them for ya still, usual price of the tire with shipping can approach actual retail pricing, and if something happens to the tire, your SOL.

fyi: by no means do i specifically endorse tire rack. I just use them as a price comparison since it's really easy to plug in a size and sort by price.
I have other connections for my tires, but I have friends who ordered from tire rack and even with mounting and balance it came out very favorly for them.
edit: oh and i have this knack for having tires magically appear when i need them I think I've actually only bought two tires in the last 5 years. The rest all either came on the car, or i got along with some deal for a set of rims. my garage is full of tires

ill sell ya some salad shooters ....what tranny and how many miles on the beast my speed density brother? 8)
www.speeddensity.org
edit 2: kuhmo 712's are a great bang for the buck tire, you can find them on a good portion of the non stock tired imports since theyre a good tire for the price...and if snow is a problem, there is always the KDWS :P

I paind 5500 for the car. Its a A4. The rims must be 11inch because the 315s barely overhang on the tire. I know the khumos are a real great tire, i got the 712s on the 89.(which is for sale)
will 285 like you said fit ok on a 11inch wheel though? How tall should my front tires be? how about rear?
and im still slightly confused, if my car came stock with 16s, now has 17s but has a lower profile like th eone i said before..my speedo is good or bad?

if 315's fit, 285's should slide on no problem.

If you go to that site I posted and plug in stock size for "Tire 1" and desired size for "Tire 2", it will tell you the dimesions for both and how far off the speedo will be. It's really useful for this type of thing.

the tread width on a 285 is 11.22" as i mentioned above, that should fit fine on an 11" wide rim. A 275-40-17 is 25.66" tall overall. and a 285-40-17 is 25.96" tall overall. A 315-35-17 is 25.68" tall overall. Stock sizes on all the tires. All the stock tire sizes available on thirdgen and fourth gens are in the 25.6" to 26.1" overall height range.
the speedo will be fine. at most it will be off a mph or two (will read low) going with a slightly taller tire.
