daily driver: 95 nissan maxima?

now that my car is seriously for sale, i'm starting to look for a daily driver.

my requirements are just that it's stick, has at least 140 horsepower, and i can get it for less than 6 grand. it has to be somewhat reliable, i need it for a year and a half, and then i'm giving it to my sister (who will turn 17 right as i graduate) (and no, she's not hot nor will i post any pictures of her). i really just want something that i can beat up and not worry about, and ultimately park in hoboken next year. if you've ever been to hoboken, you can see why i wouldn't want to keep my TA up here, unless i paid big money for a garage space.

so anyway, i'm surfing autotrader, and i come across a 95 maxima, white, v6, 5 speed, 87k miles. and they're asking 4900... looks like it's at a dealer, but that price is well under blue book, unless there's something wrong with it.

so what do you think? i might be unloading the TA as early as next week, plus i'll be splitting this car with my parents (they can drive it as a second car when i'm not around), so i can definitely afford it.

i also came across a 95 integra special edition with 140k miles for $5500. it actually looks pretty nice - dark green, leather, 5 speed, spoiler, sunroof.

Hey... I know for sure that the thrid gen camaros are dirt cheap mine had 120,000 miles on it and got it for 1500. Its pretty bad ass. Needed a paint job, new battery, tires, and an alternator but other then the usual it was a great buy... besides nothing hotter then a chick driving a camaro

well ... do you want something that "has potential" to be fast. Or something that "has potential" to save you money at the gas station? You said at least 140 HP? You might be looking at ultra beater sports car. You can always go civic (even though I hate 'em). Cheap, will last a million miles, and reliable....

Go for a 97+ sc2... pretty reliable. Or a new hyundai elantra (only like 120 horses tho)... they sell for dirt cheap new. Kia Sportage also has SOME balls... Putting in 2 cents

both of those cars that i found are sold though...

Nissans tend to fail inspection for emissions by the time there 2 years old and accordin to most people i know not very good cars.as much as i hate to admit it civivs or any other honda for that matter r altimate beater cars for money gas and milage.

a 240SX would be a good find, RWD is a hell of a lot more fun than FWD. I got to drive my friend's 240 one time....they have nice torquey engines, enough to break the tires loose. the shifters are nice too.

Maxima's are one of the best 4-doors on the road today. A buddy has a 97 and he's beat on it but kept it nice. Does road racing and drives it everywhere. It's never left him stranded.
Another buddy has a 240sx (also has an RX7) and that car is really nice. The only troubles with that car is the doggy n/a inline 4 that was originally a truck base engine. The tire spin in 1st gear is nothing more than gear multiplication... my friends 87 porsche 944 felt the same. For a daily beater they're too nice. Get a fwd car if you only plan on having it for a couple years.

Eh, Nissans are junky overall. Maximas tend to be costly to repair as well. They do get grouped in the "Its Japanese, so it must be good" group from time to time, but I dont see it.

You could pick up a 98 GP GT for about 6g's with there strong 3.8 and good trans. Interior is nothing to die for, but the car overall is pretty reliable.

You dont NEED a stick man. Not for some daily driver. You will get over it.

How about you part out the 98? I think I know a guy who wants a 3.42 rear end out of a 4th gen, as well as the aluminum drive shaft, the seats, wheels, etc etc....

Hop on www.w-body.com and check out the classifieds. I think there is a guy selling a really clean 1990 TGP with a 5 speed for $4k. Great sleeper, fun to drive.
