thats how it looks right now. The PCM is actually laying right underneath the filter, i cleaned off the area underneath and used a couple strips of velcro to secure it. I had a ghetto intake, but it got messed up and little pieces of the drier vent hose were all stuck on my MAF screen...and i wondered why my car was running like crap. I got this and the 9 inch K&N here to make it.

for the possible wetness, i put some duct tape around the connector....but ive never ever seen it get wet so im not sure if its necessary. still a good precaution though just in case.

zip tie's are fine.. don't worry about water.. the PCM gets wet inside the stock airbox too

GPGT - get rid of that Hot Air Intake and do a real CAI man.. The open cone is doing more harm than good..

just my 0.2 as an ex, highly modded, GP owner

I know, i had a fenderwell intake setup i made from home depot...but like i said, the hose i used got ****ed up and stuff, so now im back to the open cone. Its better than stock at least. If the damn aftermarket airboxes werent so expensive i'd get one...i cant see dropping $260 for the wizaired box when i could make one myself cheaper, which i eventually plan to do.

Get the SLP box... they're all basically the same.. I've had MSP, Wizair, SLP and Fenderwell and on the dyno, they're all within 1-2 WHP .. with MSP taking the lead and SLP being the lowest..

The open cone is actually worse than your Stock Airbox because it's sucking up all the hot engine air and raising your IAT ...

The SLP box can be had for ~$50 .. Otherwise, just gut your stock box ..

The only time the open cone really helps is when your at the track with the headlight popped out..

well whenever i go to the track i have the headlight out, so its not too bad...unless im on the street, then oh well. where the hell can i get an SLP box for $50? Or, whats the best way of going about gutting the stock box, its just sitting out in my garage...

check out this site HorsePower1 If it's not on his website, email him... he''s usually got'em Â*

To gut the stock air box - .. possible options :

1 - Cut a circular hole and run a tube from it down the fender [ kinda like a FWI ]

2 - Cut it right behind the headlight..so the air filter has an open face towards the headlight capsule.. similar to what you have running right now, except it won't constantly suck the hot air when the headlight isn't out..

Also, did you get a DHP PCM yet ? If not, it's def. something to look into [funds permitting ofcourse].. because it'll not only take care of any KR [yes GTs also see knock].. but also work great with your 180* T-stat.. plus the downshifts are awesome!! Â*

God.. I miss my GTX Â*

Both will work much better than running a 9" open cone...

If i get bored tomorrow, ill cut up the stock box. if i can find all the pieces to it, that is... Thanks for the tips.

And no, i dont have a PCM yet...Bill/Foff667 said he will tune it for me cheaper than a mail order PCM...ive just been lacking in the funds department recently.

Just finished up gutting the stock box...it looks so...stock

Hopefully itll free up some lost horsepower due to underhood heat...Open underhood cone = hot air intake. Next challenge is to see if i can get my 9" K&N cone to fit in the airbox...somehow itll happen.

good job man!

I dub it the "chop shop" intake! (as opposed to "ghetto")

well i love the sound the new "chop shop" intake makes under load, ill try making a box around the filter to divert the hot engine air tho

any other "free" mods for this car?

ok kasey just cause youre jealous of the intake doesnt mean you can call it names... and as for other free mods...hmmm...go to the local auto parts store and get a 180 t-stat and drill a couple small holes around the edge (but not through the seal)...not exactly free, but a thermostat is only like $5. ummmm lets see...weight reduction is free... theres not really any other free mods.

Free mods:

1 - remove weatherstripping

2 - remove engine cover

Both keep underhood temps down

Lighting mod:

Remove the black housing inside the capsule.. However, MUST re-aim the beam to avoid blinding people lol... Factory lights on 97-03 GPs sucks.. or do the BlazerTech 3200s with MSP adjustable aiming brackets..

180* T-stat is a nice mod too.. However, do NOT do a 160* w/o the fan mod or PCM programmed to have the fans come on early [ factory setting is 185* fan 1 and 205* fan 2, iirc ]

GP99GT - I was at the show last night around 11:40ish.. you probably left by then .. oh well..

Hey Kasey, why are you asking for advice on mods. I thought you were the new free mod-god?

After all - you're "body by 3m" at the njfboa meet was pretty slick. Did you cut out the holes for the headlights???

Yep that's me, the smashed up hood on the red 6er that even with stock manifolds has been warned for loud exhaust in cresskill and englewood cliffs... :P

And Frank, you KNOW you loved that... yea you all did...

Most likely the piece that runs along the back of the hood (on the cowl).

Hacked air box > cone filter

my gtp came with the slp box...JUNK!!! theres like no place for the air to come in...i mean its a great stealthy design & it still holds the computer, can utilize a cone style filter but you have to see the design to understand why it sux so bad...but for me to dump money into my cheap dd'r probably isnt the smartest thing for me since i really need to be saving $ right about now....had the car for 1 year, $330 in mods invested including $199 for my hptuners license for the car.
