Why are BMW's so Friggin Cheap

Early 90's 325i's that is

I'm helping my brother find his first car and I keep stumbling upon Beamers on craigslist for under $2,000, most of which claim only need one or two simple things done to it. I'm almost tempted to pick up a 5spd for myself!

Makes sense. Taking a look at a 1992 325i today for $1000 that looks really clean. Needs alternator & battery says the owner.

Replacement parts for older ones tend to get expensive as well. When things start to "go" more frequently then that starts to add up.

because those minor parts are going to cost alot of money to get fixed, alternator will run 500-600 for a re manufactured one

I had to order an alt for a 93 bmw 2 weeks ago at work our cost was over 200 just an FYI.
IMO avoid beat down POS german cars with a passion.

90% of Craigslist ads are spam so I would venture to guess that most of those $2K BMWs are nonexistent.

Please learn the difference between cost and retail.
Cost= what the store pays for the item
Retail = what the store sells the item for,the normal is from double to 3 times the price.

My first car was a 1986 BMW 735I handed down from my father in 2000. I had it from 110,000 to 130,000 miles. Nothing ever went wrong with it. I had 2 minor accidents and only had to replace the oil pan. One of the best cars I owned. Handed it down to my brother, he crashed it into a tree. Go figure lol

They do get electrical gremlins. and the rear shocks rip through the body sometimes. Just make sure you check it out and listen for banging that sounds like a loose exhaust or a half open door when you go over bumps

that was only 20k miles. even a complete piece of **** could last 20k more or less unscathed.

I checked it out today. Man that thing has been sitting for months and months. Couldn't even see it running. There were all sorts of parts in the back seat - radiator, water pump, etc. Interior was disgusting. The issue with the title was all up in the air and it really just wasnt worth it. Body was the only thing that looked half decent.

Oh well though, I got to have a nice ride on my bike on a nice day. Not a total loss.

you work/worked for a shop right?

cost is what the shop gets it for
list is what the part is priced at to the general population
retail is what the part supplier charges the general population
shop retail is whatever you want to mark it up to so you make a buck
