POP! goes her motor :( (EDITED with inner carnage pics)

What the title says.. I blew up my dragster motor today on my 2nd time shot. Luckily it was in the burnout and not down the track. As if that weren't bad enough, that probably means I wont be racing tomorrow, becuase tonight we were going to try to get my camaro running right for tomorrow, but instead we're now taking this apart. So far it looks like just the bottom end is hurt, the rockers, springs, pushrods, heads, all look to be fine. Won't fully know til its apart. This season is just not being nice to me Oh well, guess thats racing Â*

Think of it like this... it could have been a lot worse. Oil spraying all over the headers and catching the car on fire.
Looks like the rod's bottom half (fasteners maybe) let go and the result was the crank kicking the rod into the block . Sorry to hear but like you said, it's racing and at least the top end is looking okay.

Actually I was thinking of oil on the slicks down the track and smacking a guardrail being worse. I managed to pilot a bodied car out of that situation, a dragster would be a whole different ball game, no steering, just hold on. Thank God it didnt happen like that. Somebody came through for me for next weekend and has another motor that just needs my heads, so I'll be able to run next weekend. But again, what a PITA.

Wow! Sorry to see/hear about your mishap. Those picts brought back some painful {and expensive!} memories. Things like that made me get outa racing, and just be content to cruise from 7-11 to 7-11...

Best wishes and Godspeed on getting 'er back together! 8)

On a side note, your engine has a hole in it.

haha, when you saw the car, did you happen to look at the state of the motor? it had no heads all of today, and we finally pulled it around 4 this afternoon.

Here's some pics of the inner mess, and what really happened.

Pics of the hole in the block that you saw yesterday, along with a crack that goes all the way across it.

Here's pictures of the cylinder wall. What happened is it collapsed around the piston, causing the whole mess. You can see a rust spot in there thats more than just a few hours old, it must have been there for quite a while, but when the engine would warm up, any water in there would turn to steam and we wouldnt see it.

And here's the carnage that resulted....

And we're back to stage 1..

haha, I'm not bitching (anymore ). Thats racing right? My dad's being cool about it, he's actually down at the engine builders now (they're buddies) talking about whats gonna be built. Since the heads are still good we're going with another 440, but this time getting a mega block instead of a stock one. There goes the money I was saving to get a new daily driver!!

Holy crap. You're lucky it happened at the line and not at the 1000' mark. Hopefully you'll be running again soon.
