There's a 78 gold listed in the Star Ledger, but I think they want a lot more than $1000.
For second gens, even though they dont command the same prices as stuff in the 1960's, you're only going to find a project car for $1000. It may run, but will need a lot of work. A running DD will command around $2000 / 3000 usually, and they go up from there.
Best of luck to your friend. I tried very hard to find a 77-81 as well, but they were all out of my price range.
