Abandoned places...?
I'm trying to search out some cool abandoned buildings to photograph (inside and out) for a project. The stranger, the better; old schools, factories, buildings, whatever. As long as they're abandoned and i can hopefully find a way in. Closer to central jersey would be ideal, but not necessary. Anybody have any ideas?
I looked at weird nj, but none of the places on there have any directions on how to get to these places, only towns. So any place that you guys know how to get to would be great.

Remember what I said, if you find any cool abandoned warehouses, enough to store some cars, it could be a club house!! W00T!!

There's a whole abandoned town in NJ by the Delaware Water Gap. Can't remember the name of it, but apparently in the 30s the residents were forced to evacuate because they were going to flood the town to make the reservoir bigger. But they ended up never doing it, so the town is pretty much exactly the way it was left.

there's a big old abandoned building at the begining of Rt. 130 in North Brunswick.....When you take the Rt. 130 souoth exit off of Rt. 1 South it's on the right hand side pretty much as soon as you get onto Rt. 130 (kinda next to the Wachovia bank....also there are 3 abandoned houses on Mill rd. in Edison.....which is right off of old post road (by Boston Market) used to be 4 houses until kids burnt down one of them.

haha, JM's right! I want to go inside but she doesn't. There's an abandoned insane asylum in I think Verona. I went there a few years back with some friends, we also climbed up a huge/steep ass hill to another part of the asylum. It was in Weird NJ, but the building has been knocked down. That place was scary as hell, there was even an underground tunnel linking the buildings, didn't go in there though.

Unfortunately the place in Verona is gone They tore down the last of the buildings like 2 years ago. That was by far the freakiest place I've ever been to.

Fort Hancock at the north end of Sandy Hook has all kinds of abandoned gun batteries and turrets. You can get to a lot of them, but some are fenced because of years of decay. Also, there's the old Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia...it may be closed during the winter though. The website is www.easternstate.org. BTW, Eastern State has a great haunted prison tour during the Halloween season called Terror Behind the Walls that's definitely worth checking out.

heres the article....
Hotel proposed for near Rtes. 4, 17
Thursday, January 5, 2006
By MERRY FIRSCHEIN
STAFF WRITER
PARAMUS - A developer wants to build a hotel on the site of an empty office building off the junction of Routes 4 and 17.
The proposal by Oster Apartments LLC of Englewood Cliffs calls for a five-story Marriott Residence Inn on the 2.8-acre property. Oster owns the property. The Borough Council recently declared the site in need of redevelopment.
The 15,500-square-foot, L-shaped building would have an attached one-story gatehouse. Also proposed is a circular driveway and 114 parking spaces.
The application seeks three variances of borough laws. Plans show a larger building than is permitted on the property, and a building height of 56 feet, or five floors - more than the permitted 36 feet, or three floors. The application also is seeking an exception to certain parking regulations.
Commonly known as the S-10 building, the property was the focus of a recent report submitted to the Planning Board. According to the report, the building fits three of the eight characteristics for a property to be deemed an "area in need of redevelopment."
The building has been empty for several years and most of the glass windowpanes are broken or missing. Weeds grow in the asphalt parking lot.
In mid-December, the Planning Board voted to accept the report's recommendations. By labeling a specific property in need of redevelopment, a municipality has legal authority to revitalize it.
After the Routes 4 and 17 interchange was completed in November 1999, highway access to the building was cut off. Now, access is only through residential Maple Street.
The plans, if approved, show a future road accessing Route 17.
The S-10 property originally comprised two lots with a gas station and an office building. The lots were combined in 1980, and the gas station was demolished and the office building enlarged.
The plans were received Tuesday at the Board of Adjustment office. No date has been set for a board hearing on the application.

there was a story in wierd nj about 3 or 4 abandoned houses at the top of a hill in a little culdesac(don't know if it's the same on SSport is talking about). my girl knows where it is so i'll ask her tonight. supposedly a kid that lived in the house killed his family and burned the house down. theres even a car paked in front of one of the houses all burned up.
i gotta ask my girl tonight, she knows a bunch of places she used to go to when she was in hs. she still remembers most of them and where they are. we'll even go with you if we can.

Oh **** son, your from hackettstown eh? I went up there one time on a wierd NJ run, my friends read the map wrong ( later found out it was a typo) and ended up there, yeah ive gone around jersey a little I live 2 miles from the Jersey Devils house, and is about 2-300 yards behind one of my friends house before they moved, its not as scary as you think, but go down my road which is one of the only in Galloway not developed on cause i got a landfill down the road, ANYWHO... i do have two sites one ill tell you about and the other is in a wierd NJ mag, ill give you the short version of the story, we almost got arrested, and it happen to be the place we were looking for when we screwed up and ended in hackettstown lol, its the old airplane factory and i forget which one its in, the other one is about a mile from me, and we used to sneak in, Known as the White house, due to two things, the house is white, and one of the former residents was named white ( on the mailbox) this house was built if i have to estimate between 1850-1900, it so small and creepy, and wierd stuff happened in there too, firstly, the first time we went in we went into the living room, which had a ceiling fan, well the fan wasent spinning, i know, cause i was the last person out of the room to go look at the master living room, well i was the first one back in the room, and what do you know, the fan was spinning, not quickly, but as though someone tapped it enough, the second was that my friends and me were chilling in the same room the fan was spinning, well we were all taking photos of eachother, and for some reason, i was the only one with red eyes, doesnt sound interesting, well theres more, even though the mailbox had white on it, we found alot of papers and things with a last name whos the same as mine, im not going to give away my name for security reasons, but for some reason i had red eyes in all the photos, and my family is one of the original founders of my town just to give a little back track info, the third one is when another time we were haning out int once again the living room, and for soem reason there wasa schreeching noise, like a bat, coming from the master living room across the hall, we went in, and found out the noise was coming from under the fireplace!!! well we lifted the bricks up and there was nothing but ground, no celler, after that i hadent gone there in a while till i went to show one of my friends the house, well this is the last one, and was the last time i was in there, we went in and the house was originally torn apart alittle, someone knocked the stairway handrail down, well we go in, and its set up!!! it scared the **** out of me thinking someone else might be going in there, so i never went back, well a couple of my friends did and i asked them if they noticed the handrail and they said what are you talking about, it was on the floor where its always been...... and so, ive never gone back, and each timei got by it i have this urge to go in ,and take pics to show jus thow eire this place is, oh and the former residnts before it became abandonded, lived there when i was going to elementary school, they were really old people, and just one day they werent there.

there an old abandoned school in my town of Closter, called village school i actually went there from grades 6-8, you can actually walk right up to the building, no gates or anything, its very overgrown, and falling apart brick building, a few of my friends have been in it too, There are no gaurds and no cameras either.
Also i believe in New milford there and old water treatment plant or power plant, about a block down from Kinderkamack Rd, I dont know exact location or how locked up it and the property is, but I'm sure maroman88 can tell you more.

Skillman Institute, in Montgomery NJ. Many have gone in and around it, but you're not supposed to be there, there's usually a guard driving around. It's an abandoned Insane-asylum, many buildings over there. Oh, and it's scary as hell. watch out for deer.
