motors dont like being overheated
but thank god for computer technology. The other night, i went with soem friends to Hooters on Rt 17. When i left, my friend pulled out behind me and wanted to see me jump on it, so he could see/hear my SS at full throttle. Of course i had to. according to my friends, i left lines with my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.
Well i get to my turn off, about a mile down 17, and come to a stop sign, When i proceed to go, the car has absolutely NO power and sounded if i was running open headers. I saw that the check engine light had came on. I could not rev up past 1500 or so. I managed to coax it to the nearest parking like 3 blocks away and it stalled out as soon as i pulled in. Since i almost always have my laptop with me, i hooked up and scanned the code.. i read "engine coolant temp overheated- protection mode active" i then happened to look at the gauge, on cluster and on HP tuners and both were pegged in the red.
So i popped the hood and listened for my electric water pump...nothing... i turned the key on and off trying to see if anything would happen, still no water pump. I finally beat the crap out of the relay and i heard it click on, and my pump started. I left it spin with the engine off until the temp came down to 198 degrees. The "protection mode" apparently shut down part of my engine or limited stuff to prevent further damage due to the overheating. i cleared the code once it was back down in temp and everything was fine. I then messed with the relay more, no luck, it was wasted. I yanked the terminal out of the relay and wired it directly to the batt terminal on the fuse box so i could make it home. That got me home fine, however i just cut the wire once the car was in my garage, this weekend i have to get a new relay and rewire it all. this time i may hook up a buzzer or noticeable light to come on IF the waterpump ever looses power again. at least then i would catch it earlier.
