143,000+ miles....
And then it went. Coming home from Ocean City, I was driving, and just happen to notice a little smoke coming from my car, I quickly looked at my temp gauge to see it climbing to around 230-240 before I could pull over and turn it off. My upper hose came off, and thought thats all, no biggy. I tightened it back on and I got a ride to Wawa, got two gallons of water ( they had no antifreeze) and put it in the car. The temp was fine, and thought all was well, till I went to the back of the car, noticed the exhaust sounded a little wierd, and that the check engine light was on. I thought it might be for cause it ran tso high. WEll I went to take off and it hesitated like hell, and only got about 500 ft. down the road before it shot back up. I pulled over, looked under the car, no water, opened the cap, as tho there was like a gallon in it ( and I did take into consideration when I filled it up the first time that there was air in the line, and got most of it out). Then the person who gave me a ride notcied that my exhaust was puffing white. By now I looked at my A/F ratio gauge wand was reading as tho it was all messed up, and my Check engine light was blinking. So I believe I have done it, Ive blown a 3800 series head gasket, and you know what, its about time, cause when I yank this bitch im adding two more cylinders, which leads me to the classifieds area, if anyones got an LS1 for sale. anywho, just thought you guys should know, even if you granny drive a car, and take care of it better then your first born ( I have no kids so dont worry lol) it can still go crap on you. Tomorrow I gotta go back and check the oil for antifreeze in it, if so, w/e ift happens.

143,000 miles I think you got good miles out of that car. So use this as an opportunity to make changes. It maybe cheaper for you just to get a new car with the V8, but I am not sure what the market is. I have over 118,000 miles on my Bird and I wont touch it till something big breaks. I hope I can get to 143,000 or more before it does lol.

our junkyards part out good cars like that to private buyers. you'll never see a vette in there.
Damn dude the way you drive and your relatively low mileage compared to the way I drive and having over 180,000 with a constant 220* temp I;'m surprised yours blew. Then again you did do a lot of long distance in it.

If your thinking of doing a V6-V8 conversion. You may want to think of getting a complete wreck car (Favoarably a rear ended car). I looked into this a few years ago when I had a 3.4l V6. You'll need more than just a motor & tranny. You'll need all the wiring harness, K-member, suspension, Fuel pump. It will be easier and less time consuming to just buy an LS1 car.

even though I seen you posted every thing your going to need. I still think you should stick with the original plan and drop the 3800S/C in there. Hell dude you got all the parts.

If your talking about a 3800 S/C out of a Grand Prix/Regal that won't work.
Sorry to hear about the car Jeff. Thats pretty good miles out of her and she served you well!

That sucks dude, and for a 3.8 that's not a good amount of miles at all. Sorry to hear. (Mine was at around 194k when it got yanked out, the worst it did was burn oil and make funny noises).

Here's a link that shows all the parts you'll need to do a V6 to V8 conversion.

stay on topic at hands guys. Well I finally got some time to look at it today. the car is misfiring cylinder #1. I pulled the plug and it was cracked, so i put a new one in. It idles fine now, but when I give it gas it just hesitates, so it could be a mess of things. It just keeps coming up cylinder #1, so its not like theres water in my fuel, cause then id get random/multiple misfires. theres no antifreeze/water in the oil, so it doesnt seem to have a bad gasket, idk if i bent or have a stuck valve, snapped a spring, bent the connecting rod and its not gettign ample compressin, or if its more of an ignition thing like a bad coil, or a bad wire cause there is a write up about how our 3.8's get hot and start to buck after a while and its due to the heat soak into the coils and burning of wires, but i just changed my wires to MSD and they look good, so i gotta investigate further. anybody got an idea, like i said thats the only code coming up that cylinder 1 is misfiring, and its only when I give it gas, when it idles its great...till oyu put it in gear, then it misfires.

Sounds like your due for a timing chain, but sense its just on #1 I would pull the valve cover and the the fuel pump fuse and get some one to crank it and watch the springs

Well, great news, I tore down the one side of the car, switched the coil packs around, checked the valve springs, checked al the spark plug wires, and shazam, it runs fine now. what was the cause? damned if I knew, but im gonna keep my eye on it, i only test drove it up my road, no prolonged driving yet. so IM BACK ON THE ROAD!!!!
