We do usually, but we got a late start (we just got the tree today) and it wont be up until tomorrow. I doubt this year we will have trains up though.

I do. I've got two loops of Lionel O gauge under the tree this year.
My dad and I have been collecting for years.

I used too. I had a few old Lionels and some HO trains too. They're all in a box somewhere now.

Well there is your problem! Those babies are notoriously loud. The later models were a bit quieter. Even when they are in perfect shape they are loud. I have a pair of them, and I dont usually run them.
In the latest issue of Classic Toy trains they even mention that they are unusually loud. So dont feel bad, hehe.
I try and switch the trains a few times a week, we have a bunch of em, and this is the time of year that they get the most activity.
Here are some pics of the collection...

I have a set of postwar erie PAA's similar to those union pacifics behind the Lackawanna FM in your pic, their quieter and Im looking in to a 726 berkshire, that being worm gear driven has to be pretty quiet too

Those Alco style engines (like your Erie pair) are some of the best and quietest runners I've encountered, you cant go wrong with them.
I have a couple 736's and they run great. I'd try and find a 736 over a 726, the 726 dosent have magne-traction.

I haven't run any of mine in years. I have a fairly large collections and every time I say just a loop around the tree I end up taking over the entire living room until my wife gets mad enough to makes me stop! Plus she hates the smell of the smoke, but I just gotta have the locos smoken!
When I set them up around the tree I used homosote with the cork covering to detent the sound. Works real well!

Man, did you say COLLECTION OR A WAREHOUSE? That is amazing and what a nice layout. You're of course NOT MARRIED. What wife in here right mind would WASTE an entire room for that, when it could be a lot more useful to display CRANBERRY GLASS or STUFFED BEARS!
