camshaft swap

im looking at cams for my 98z and i stumbled upon this one

GM Camshaft Part # 12561721 has never been installed. It's the camshaft for 2001 - 2004 Corvette LS1 and the LQ9 6.0L 2002 - 2006 High Performance Cadillac Escalade. This would also work great in the 4.8L and 5.3L Engine. Would be an upgrade for earlier LS1's in the Corvette, Z28 Camaro and the Trans Am Firebirds.

Specification on the camshaft:

Intake- 196 degrees of duration at .050" with .467" of Max Valve Lift.

Exhaust- 201 degrees of duration at .050" with .479" of Max Valve Lift.

will it work with my 98z? and will i get a decent power increase?

personally, id recommend and aftermarket camshaft, getting a gm one is ok, but theres more to be gained with a better grind

for somewhat of a comparison, i swapped out my '03 LS6 stock cam for my current cam which is 239/242 .603"/.609"

but to answer your 2 questions... yes it will work, and yes youll get an increase

so do u think the 70 plus 16 shipping is worth the hp gain i would get? or should save and get an aftermarket one? and i did just read that this cam is a .479/.467 lift and 196/207 duration. as teh one in my car now is .500/.500 lift and 198/209 duration. wouldnt mine be better? sorry for the stupid questions but im just learning about these ls1 cars and mods on them. im not looking to go over the top with a cam just something to wake her up some more

The one in your car right now, assuming stock is:

Duration@.050 198.86 intake 209.25 exhaust
Lift .498 intake .497 exhausts
LSA 119.45

IMO no it would not be worth it to get the other cam. If you're looking to be budget minded, grab a used LS6 cam and a set of LS6 springs and enjoy. Compared to the stock 98 cam it's a decent bit bigger (204/218 .551/.547 117.5) and won't sacrifice much/any driveability (although that is GREATLY subjective...). It's not a stupid question, everyone had to start the knowledge gaining process somewhere.

Don't waste your time on that cam, only GM cam I think is worth is a first generation LS1 hotcam, and they even managed to screw that up by changing the specs on it so finding one is almost impossible. However I ran high 11's with just that off the shelf cam

I agree dont waste your time. Order up a hotcam or a 224 cam if your looking for an upgrade but nothing too serious.

Good advice. It's not the $86 for the cam.....its the all the other stuff that is needed to go with it and the effort involved. Tune? Gaskets? Springs? Pushrods? And the work to do the job not worth it for that small gain.....
