Well first off, you do realize an AR15 is gonna set you back a grand or two right?

just be careful what you purchase. NJ is strict when it comes to that rifle. The AR15 is actually illegal to own in NJ but you can get a AR15 style rifle. Basically as long as it does not say AR15 on the reciver your ok. There are a few other items too. I dont think flash supressors are allowed on the end of the barrel either. I cant remeber what else but any local dealer should be able to help you out. But I would stay away from Ray's sports shop on Rt22 in Plainfeild he is way over priced.
I have one made by Olympic arms and its great and it set me back a few years ago around 750 for mine.

And another point, is unless you have a big property and can make a backdrop, you can't shot a non rim fire cartridge unless at a club.

Do yourself a favor and find one in 9mm or .45 so that you can actually shoot the thing. No indoor range anywhere will let you shoot that.

if you want accuracy buy a rock river NMa2 or A4, i use the NMA2 for high power and i will consistently score master level all the way out to 600 yards. If i were you i would stay away from places like olympic and vulcan, or hess. They are CRAP poor workmanship, etc. as they cut corners. You can get killer deals on gunbroker.com. if you are looking for a plinker you cant beat STAG.

I think they only thing you would need to be worried about is obtaining a NY hunting permit for whatever you might be hunting for, and since you aren't hunting, I am gonna say you should be in the clear. Just remeber, ammo in the glove box, gun in the trunk.

ive had one for about 10 years. they dont cost $1000 or more, depending on what model you get. look into bushmaster. quality guns, any variety you can think of. a good idea is to get a detachable handle, or the flat-top receiver. that way you can mount any optics you want. colaspable stocks are available at any online store.

This thread is just chock full of wrong information. AR-15 is the civilian designation of the military M-16/M4. All sorts of companies make parts for AR-15's and the parts are readily available with about half being completely legal. Mike I know we talked a lot about it the other night but all you have to remember that in NJ you must have a minimum of a 16" barrel, no bayonet lug, flash suppressor, fixed stock and clips that hold no more then 10rnds each. Other then that build it to your hearts content. My dad & I both have one that we pieced together from parts and they haven't grossed over $500 in parts if you shop wisely.
Both my lower receivers are from Rock River Arms. Some other good companies are DPMS & Bushmaster.
