hmmmm Parts pile clusterf***???
...I have the 350 from the T/A sitting in my garage and a 700R4, and a B&M trans pak for it. the Saab trans is toast but the car itself is in good shape...clean leather interior, heated seats, great handling, its a great car all around but I can't afford the trans....I can fabricate the neccisary moddifications to do it and the fact that the car has a HUGE engine bay makes it easier...the frame rails are positioned perfectly under where the mounts would go and the underside has room for a DS and exhaust......wha do you guys think? scrap is down...nobody wants to buy the 350, might as well do something with it

Yeah, but what about a rear? I guess you could somehow fab a 4-link or F-body torque arm setup to work, but that'd be something left to a chassis shop.

I have a torque arm and a 4th gen rear that would work...looking at the Saab rear suspention it wouldn't be a ton of fabing...I'll just need upper shock mounts and make custom control arms....I wonder how a 10in long control arm would fair traction wise

I would check the weight of a Saab engine before i go dropping that in there. changing the engine without setting up the suspension for the added weight can change the handling characteristics, and also the wear and tear on such parts as brakes and shocks. personally, forget about it, its more work then you need to get yourself involved in. you say you have no money so putting a engine and fab up setups to make it fit, which will cost alot of money. you gotta change the cooling system, the fuel system, most likely the positoin of the shifting linkage, steering linkage, or rack depending on what you have ,and thats if it will fit after the 350 is in there. and thats just off the top of my head. then you gotta weld stuff as well, and also make it fitall under there. best thing to do, is jsut replace hte trans and move on. and as for the engine, find a rolling chassis and move on with that.

ehh with a 700R4 it wouldn't be a big deal about shift linkage, the fuel system would be what LOL 2 hoses its a carb set up...it will need a thicker rad though, it already has dual fans. as far as suspention, I'll have to look at the Saab set up and see what would fit. the hardest/most expensive part, is going to be makin the guages work but Its a SBC, I just need a 6 guage kit and wire loom. no worse that cluster****ing a 3400 and 3.4 together....
but think of the out come...that motor was beastly in a 3300lb car....imaging it in a 2200lb car. I figure mid-low 12s the way it sits put a set of heads on it and and a matched cam...I'll be putting in a cage!!! lol this is all figurative, I could talk a bunch of **** go to the track and run a 18 but yea....

I might run a full exhaust but its still gonna be loud...I mean I could probably get some ricer to put a few C notes on the 1st race of the night If I left it off and pushed it up the lane...but after that I'd be kinda boned

now that I think about it.......the frame might not be strong enough....I'll launch it once and the R/F tire will never touch the ground again.....

and we all know how that turned out.... and the car is 3300 pounds wiht the engine in it. the saab isnt 2200 lbs. thats less the na civic hatchback, hell thats lighter then an origial cobra. the cars weight is between 2700-2900 I think. so lets say adding the 350 gains it 100 lbs. so now its a 2800-3000 lbs. car. you saved 300lbs, but now you gotta add the other parts to make it work, which I would say bring it back up to 2900-3100 lbs. so now the car is heavier then from production, especially in the front end

its not like your gonna brign the front end off the ground with a basic 350. though over a short period of time im sure the chassis would begin to become distorted if there is no additional bracing.

true, I'll have to check weights tonight...the bigest thing is that the engine is ontop of the trans facing backwards in front of the tires...with the 350 the trans will be behind the engine behind the tires

if your seriously gonna make this thing rear wheel drive and what not, take a rear out of a 240sx, or even a jag xj6, they are everywhere in j-yards.

it will handle alot better, and the parts are cheaper. they are I.R.S. ,adn yeah they hold up a little better then 10 bolts if installed properly.
if you wanna try to retain the FWD, I believe you can use a corvair transmission, so the trans would be infront of the 350.

they were used extensively through racing in the 60's. not much has changed on them. inboard disc brakes, and I would believe its strong enough.

hmmm it might be an option...it would need more Fab than I'm willing to do...but then again I need to redo the breaks on the 10 bolt or...nevermind

Gotta remember, in your mind, its alot cheaper then whats written on the checks. builds like these, when there is no direct aftermarket setups, can get costly very quickely. this works, but now i have to modify or buy another one to make that work, and so on. dont run the 99 yards and then stop. you dont wantto set your car up for a 10 bolt and go blowing those up every week. might as well go the extra mile and get somethign that will take the punishment, even if its a 8.5 rear, its a step up from a 7.5.

One of the cars Jeff said to put the engine in was a 240 or a XJ Jag.
Thats why.
