BEST RADIATOR: Ron Davis, Afco, or Griffin ?
Need some opinions here...which radiator is best for my situation?
87 Iroc w a Vortech Supercharger (JS Performance built)... when Josh built it in the fall, it ran awesome, not hot, no cooling issues...stayed the same thru winter..
now the summer is here and I learned the iroc HATES the warm weather..the supercharger is like a f--kin oven under there...the stock radiator aint cutting it, the car heats up like a bat outta hell...so i cant enjoy it till this problem gets rectified...it currently has a dual fan set up and a 160 degree t-stat.
I'm looking at 3 options for a high perf aluminum radiator...Ron Davis, Afco, and Griffin...now I have spoke to techs at all 3 companies and naturally, they all claim theres are the best...which is no help to me...so I turn to you guys for opinions...what should I go with?
I want to be able to get in the iroc and drive a 100 miles from north nj to the shore in 90+ degree, sitting in some nasty traffic on the parkway, and not have to sweat bullets looking at my temp gauge every 5 seconds, while watching it like a hawk.
all 3 brands are 2 rows 1 inch thick tubing aluminum radiators. all 3 are in the same price range, so just looking for opinions here on what you think is best. so far im leaning toward Ron Davis, as I haven't seen any bad reviews of them online, (plus aparently all the Nascar and offroad desert racing teams use them..who knew?). Josh at JS recomended Afco, but says RD is great also.. anyone have these units or know anyone who does use them? praises? complaints? concerns?
the floor is all yours...im all ears... thanx

If Josh built it and told you R.D. and Afco are both good choices, why not just pick one of those and call it a day.

oh for stats/performance i can run the car on a 90+ day and my motor doesnt creep over 190-200 ish in HEAVY stop and go traffic. i run a 160 stat and also the 170 degree thermostat switch for the fans. the ron davis fans move ALOT of air and when i called them will support a 1000 hp motor (which in traffic youre not actually on the motor where 1000 hp would peak).
on a side note our cars our bottom breathers like u already know so the stop and go is a great test for our cars.
i had a becool radiator at one point and it was ok, but i LOVE the ron davis setup.

I run a ron davis, but my situation is prob no help (alcohol drag engine) however, the fan moves a LOT of air. Enough to cool the trans cooler off thru the radiator, and my trans runs extremely hot. What we end up doing is unplugging the water pump and leaving the fan on between runs because the water will get too cool if the pump stays running.

just to be clear, i would ONLY be buying the radiator from one of these companies, not the fan set up as well. i called ron davis yesterday and that rad with the fan set up is close $1100 as camaroracer pointed out. right now the car has the stock gm dual fan set up.
do you guys with ron davis think an RD rad (w auto tranny cooler) with the stock gm dual fans, and a 160 t-stat will be enough to solve my problem and achieve what im looking for??? (as much as id love to buy the entire set up $1100 is just way out of my budget)...
let me know..

i dont know if it would, but to be honest the stock gm fans dont get much pulling force from the fans as there is no tightly sealed shroud. like they say buy once cry once. personally i would get the entire setup from them cause i went the same route as you almost before (except i had be cool rad with stock tpi fans) and after doing the setup i did i was VERY happy.

I've been running a Be Cool in my car for years and I'm very happy with it. As Joe mentioned above I think the biggest shortcoming is the stock fan setup. My stock dual fan setup still allows my car to get too hot in stop and go traffic. As soon as I get any kind of airflow from the car moving again the temps drop like a rock. You may want to bite the bullet and get a good fan setup along with the radiator.
