fix it up or sell it?
my brother has an 89 jimmy with a 6 inch lift and 36" tires. it hasnt moved in 4 years and im kinda feeling a bit sentimental and in a fixer-up-er mood and was thinking about starting to work on it. the truck is an all out off-roading machine, with 4.56 gears, turbo 400 trans, winch, and about 2k more upgrades hes put in it. but he doesnt seem to want to work on it anymore. should i fix it up and try to use it or just convince him to sell it?

dont think he wants to part it out. the truck is still under his name, but we're all just tired of seeing it in the driveway, so its either it gets fixed up or sold.
i forgot to mention, truck is in working order, has a lot of body rust (i know how to fix it for the most part) and the interior is smelly and probably moldy from years of mud being thrown in it and left

If it is just an off road toy... Just Gut the interior and spray in some bed liner to save weight and get rid of the moldy smell. As far as the rust, some junkyard panels can fix that easily.
FIX IT UP!!

Um...what exactly is wrong with it? Does it not run or i it just stting?? Gut the interior rhino line it (take car of the mold smell), and take it in the woods and beat the chit out of it (screw the rust, duct tape and spray can will fix the rust holes). You would probably get more if you part it. POST PICS!!!

It sounds like it's a 20 year old POS that's taking up space. Sell it, and save your money.

i will try to get pictures of the truck up on here. but basically heres where it stands, both fenders/quarters have rust on them, but right near the tire so i was thinking i'd just take a sawsall and cut out the rust and just make the wheelwell bigger is all. there is rust on the rockers but i think i canjust weld some sheet metal on there same with the rear tailgate.
basically the last run that this truck had was my brother went out wheelin with it, got it stuck in this huge mud hole, tried to get out and the front diff. blew up, put it in 2H and the 700r4 in it blew up. after the truck was incapacitated he threw the winch on a tree, when the winch was pulling him out something int he mud slashed the front right tire wide open and the winch burned up as soon as it got out of the mud. that was its final day.
everything on the truck works now though, everything has been fixed except the exhaust is no longer hooked up, it went on a different vehicle.
i was kinda thinkin of fixing it up just cuz i really want a truck, i could borrow this im sure if i help him fix it more. also, i hate to say it, but im getting a little tired of driving the 3rd gen everywhere lol. 5 years of that kinda ride (i put stiffer shocks and springs in it) has been enough for now lol, i want to keep the car though and keep fixin it up lol.
like i said i'll try to get some pictures up on here soon of the truck
oh and also one last thing, truck has high miles, not too sure how high but my brother speculates its up near 200k. says that the spedometer was never adjusted for the tires so we're not too sure

Eh those projects take alot of money. Ask me I know...
1ton axles will run you $800-1000
Regear lock them (cause whats the point if both ur tires aint spinnin) and rebuild $1000 on the cheap side
Rust fix - Lots of time, knowledge and skill with welding.
I say sell it. In my experience its way more cost affective to buy a nicer later 90s early 00s truck, find one with a solid front axle or do a solid front axle swap and not have to worry about the rust, rot, bent frames, torn through steering boxes and all that stuff that comes with older trucks.

strip the paint and fix the rust and leave it primer black . it would be a cool truck to have done up but its all about looking into how much it will cost to fix it up and seeing if you would be able to get that much out of it if you decide to sell it down the road

Ok, so it needs an exhaust and it is drivable. that is no biggie. The rust looks like normal blazer/jimmy rust. the front clip (fender, hood and what not can be changed with many different year panels. the only real difference is the grill and front lighting. That can get cheap through a junk yard or another donor truck. The pick-ups also use the same panels. Miles do not mean anything. My 87 had over 250,000 on the original motor and diffs and the motor was finally starting to die. I say it is worth it to fix. If you mud smart then you will be okay. It is when you push the envelope and see how far you can go with the truck that you will break something.
You want a daily driver so honestly that gmc is not for you. With the big tires, lift kit, and whatnot it will make for a rough, noisy, and fuel scarfing ride. I get around 12-14 mpg with the factory size tires and stock suspension on the '90. Yeah it is fun to drive but that thing is made to go off road. If you follow what others are saying about building up the axles and everything it would be a bad a$$ truck.

Yeah, I've got one of these rotting away in my driveway waiting for me to get on it. Boatside the rockers, cover the floor in bedliner, and wheel it. Buy some white Krylon. Hit a tree, cover with Krylon. Smile. Repeat.

I personally would sell the truck. I love these old full size GMC and Chevy Trucks. This one looks like it could be taken back by someone. It could be saved. The right guy will come and take it off your hands. You won't have to think about. I mean, if it has sat in your driveway for that long, and you are just getting around to thinking about fixing it, I would just sell. Think about the extra money it could bring your bro. The rust damage that these trucks get from just sitting is absolutely out of control. You would probably spend more money and time fixing this particular truck than if you were just to take the money from selling this truck and buy another Jimmy or Blazer that already is up and running with a nice lift and tires. Just a couple months back, there was a Full-Size 89 Blazer on ebay that went for $1800. bucks. It came completely stock except for the fact that it has a brand new GM Goodwrench small block and a rebuilt tranny.
If you hold on to this truck, it will end up being a money pit.
Just my opnion. Hope it helps.

not too sure, a friend of mine put in a transfercase lowering kit, cuz his u-joints were getting chewed up. that might help for the rear atleast.
oh thats the other thing, front driveshaft on this truck broke, so right now its only a 2x4 lol

t-case lowering kit FTL - kills ground clearance.
My cherokee has a slip yoke eliminator and I'm running a double cardon front driveshaft with the built in slip yoke in the rear. Wrangler has a shorter wheelbase, so your angles will be tighter though.
