Questions about gun permits - NJFBOA - Home of New Jersey's Camaros and Firebirds

So I've been thinking about getting a gun permit. I'm sure there are quite a few people here that have it. I figured it would be easier to get info from some of you guys here than trying to google everything. First question is what's the process? About how long does it take to get? Now I have no need to actually carry it with me anywhere but if i were to take it to a gun range im guessing it would have to be in the trunk or something? Any other info that maybe someone can pass along?

You gotta go to your police department, ask for the paper work for a fire arms id card. Fill it all out, pay them, wait a month, and if approved then you go back for finger prints.

Once thats done, you can buy any rifle/shotgun you like, and if you want a pistol you need to fill out another set of forms for that and if approved you get a one day pass.

As for carrying, you need to separate the ammo from the guns and a trigger locks are a good thing. Guns should be in trunk or not easy to reach.

As for shooting on a range, if you want to use a state place you will need your hunting permit. Which entails taking a class.

1. Go to your local PD and ask there.
2. Fill out some forms that they will give you
3. Pay ( you didn't think it would be free, right?

)
4. Wait until they contact all your references and come to your house.
5. Wait some more. ( I waited 4 or 5 months for my gun permit)
6. Get fingerprinted
7. Buy a gun within allowed time period.

I think that's it. If it's not someone will correct me.

It wasn't one day. I think it said 60 or 90 days. I know I waited couple of weeks before I bought my gun.

i filled mine out and was fingerprinted before they did anything. they send the prints to FBI i believe then go on with their local investigation. usually takes longer than a month even though by law its a 30 day max.

i thought it was 30 days and you can ask for another 30 day extension if need be. you can only buy one pistol per permit.

Ahh ok . Sweet. That answered basically all my questions lol. As for the hunting.. One of the reasons I wanted to get the permit was because I've always been interested in hunting. I was always under the impression that if you had a gun permit u can hunt, I wasn't aware that there was a separate permit for hunting. I'm assuming that you have to first have your gun permit THEN get a hunters permit?

Nope, no real order.

But to hunt you need a NJ hunting license and for certain hunting, tags etc.

And Tsar, the fire arm card is a lifetime thing, so you can buy rifle/shotgun whenever, but a pistol is a timed thing, once apporved its a damn small window you have.

I know it's a small window, but it's not 1 day. I know it took me more then several weeks to pick out a gun that I liked. And I needed to show them my permit before they even allowed me to hold the guns (I got FID card and my gun permit at the same time).

ok most of this is right but ill give you the correct explanation... this may be long...

as said go to police department and get the paper work for a "firearms id card"... now at this point you need to figure out if you just want rifles/shotguns or if you want a pistol too... the "id card" itself is good to buy as many and what ever rifles/shotguns (as long as they are NJ legal and thats a whole another discussion) if you are looking to buy a pistol first you have to be 21 years old... but there is a seperate form to fill out for a pistol purchasing permit... that pistol permit is only good for one pistol... so if you want to buy 3 pistols then you need to file for 3 permits.... each permit is only good for 3 months (90 days) but if you are running out of time you can go to the police dept and file for an extension for a small fee.... after you hand in all your paperwork and backround info... they will do the backround checks that are needed to see if you are sane (they take long as hell with this in most towns so dont be scared if it takes upwards of 3 months) after you check out they will call you back in to get finger printed and then they will give you your card and permits (if filed for)....

now i keep my id card on me at all times (just incase im transporting so i dont forget it)... guns should be the trunk.... unloaded and out of reach... ammo so be contained seperate from the firearm and as stated above trigger locks and or case locks are always better... BTW all said and done its probably gonna cost you about $50 depending on if you get pistol permits or not... hope this helps any other questions let me know...

Yea, just wanted to let it known, but wasn't sure on the exact details.

Also, if you don't plan on joining a gun club, all NJ ranges only allow .22 rimfire and shotguns.

Edit: Brandon you do not need an ID card to transport... I used to go to the range all the time with just my hunting permit and as long as the guns are registered to someone I think you are ok.

probably not matt... maybe you just didnt get caught ... if thats the case then the gangsters cant get in trouble i mean all their stolen guns are registered to somebody.... if you are driving the car but the owner of the guns is with you... thats ok.. but if you are alone and the guns are in your trunk and you dont have an id card (meaning at all) im pretty sure they are going to take them away (impound them) and then you can present your card and get them back maybe.... never happened to me but this is what i think would happen...

Ok well, I know I was allowed to hunt alone before I got my ID card legally. I think at least.

I'll check on that. Either way, doesn't really matter in this case. Btw, don't buy guns for people without ID cards, and if you go to a gun store, don't bring someone that is going to be to excited to see guns. Gun dealers can be pretty finicky on the straw purchase deal.

yea you were legal because the guns werent registered to you, but rather your father (im guessing) who is your gardian and owner of the guns... if the owner is with you then you are ok... you dont need the id card to shoot them... just to own them... ifyou took your safety coarse for hunting then you would have been fine...

I dont know where you got that information from, but its wrong. there are indoor public ranges that allow almost any caliber. I went to one and shot my 9mm and my friend shot his .40 and .357 mag no problem. Some other people were shooting AR's and AK's.

You can shoot any size caliber except magnum loads indoors at the Bullet Hole in Bellville. JM & I go just about every week.

Sorry, wasn't clear. NJ state ranges. Not private ranges that happen to be in NJ. My bad.

why go to a "state range", like what are the benefits especially if its only small bore and shotgun.....

Cause I happen to have a .22 and lots o shotguns, and or, its free to use if you having a hunting license.

oo free is always good... but doesnt get much more fun than shooting bigger bore rifle for me... so ill stick to dix... BTW dont know if anybody shoots at DIX... but i guess there is alot more people shooting now and that place is packed on the weekends now.... can only get an hour on a table and thats it sometimes... its crazy! but worth it if you can get on for at least 2 hours... 1 hour is only like 3 seize fires... so if your sighting in a gun you better be good or youll be shooting around the target next time out.... (problem i had) trying to sight in a new rifle i bough... got closer everytime but tthen ooops times up.... but i should have it pretty close next time out... what a PITA though

Short barrel 10 gauge shooting slugs sounds close enough to a 30 ought 6.

One of the reasons I have been hesitant to big up a larger rifle, just no where to really just go plink. And or, .22 is dirt cheap.

yea ammo is fairly expensive for 30cal but its so much fun but you can plink at the indoor ranges here in brick and lakewood.. but 25 just isnt fun for long rifle... thats why i go to dix... plus dix is outdoors and we get all kinds of crap to shoot before we go like soda bottles and cans and these toy soldier decorations we had for christmas that got ruined and were junk... as long as you clean up your mess at dix they dont care what you shoot just short of anything that was or is still living... 10 gauge must be nasty.. never shot one that big... 12 gauge is where i draw the line... honestly my pump 20 gauge is my favorite shotgun that own and have shot before... id like to get a 12 pump mossberg in the future but thats after car is built and i have a house... then i can start buying more firearms again... i still want a cz-75 pistol too... local shop actually got one and im in love with it... just dont have the $500 to cough up... (thanks to the bird haha) what do you hunt with 10 gauge anyway...? elephants? in jersey?

Nah, 10 gauge is a nice deer gun if you are shooting slugs, which is kinda the only way to go in this lovely state we live in... and you could def use a 10 with a longer barrel and if it can swallow a 3.5 shell for ducks/geese etc.
