Next gen (2015?) Camaro to shrink?
Picked this up elsewhere...
Quote:

Chevy's next generation Camaro is going to shrink in size from its current behemoth underpinnings and share a new global Alpha platform with the third-generation Cadillac CTS and the all-new ATS. With the next Camaro due out in 2015, the CTS is destined to bow in 2013 as a 2014 model, while the 3-Series fighting ATS is scheduled to arrive just afterwards.
The news comes from a report by Motor Trend after a presentation by consultancy firm Grant Thornton LLP at the Automotive Press Association on Thursday.
Other details revealed include plans to discontinue the CTS Coupe and SportWagon, likely because both a coupe, convertible and wagon version of the ATS are in the works. The CTS will then grow slightly (by roughly 6-inches) to be more in line with the 5 Series and E-Class.
To make this plan cost effective its likely that the new Alpha platform will use different amounts of aluminum and steel depending on whether it is being used for a Cadillac or a Chevy, with the Caddy getting a higher percentage of lighter, but more expensive, aluminum.
In addition to this new MT also suggests, the 2015 Camaro SS is likely to get a supercharged or turbocharged V6, rather than a V8.

Arent there rumors for a smaller direct injection v8? Wouldnt it make sense to use it in the camaros and trucks to increase volumes just like this proposed platform share?

In the article they mention going with a turbo or supercharged v6 in the next Camaro.

Yah, Alpha platform will kinda be like Infiniti's FM platform.
There is a good chance that the Camaro variant will be a lower-cost unit. GM is pouring a lot of money into the Alpha Caddy, known as the ATS, to nail the handling better then the 3 series or G35. They are really focusing hard on the steering feel and ride.
Camaro gets an update for 2011 with the convertable.
Alpha was originaly not designed to handle a V8. Its always been a question if Camaro will move to Alpha or something similar, say a lightened version of what it has now, or somthing from Holden.
Holden is also currently working on its next-generation platfrom, to go smaller to meet teh need for lighter cars as most of what they do is exported to other countries.
And of course Holden will not walk away from the V8. So its a coin toss at this point.

a Camaro SS is NOT an SS without a V8.

Boosted v6 is fine for the SS, as long as the Z28 keeps a v8

All we have to do is go back to the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. How many of us now would KILL to have this car in your hands right now. It had MUCH better handling/ better gas mileage/ higher performance/ 1LE package and more than the GTA! I would have liked the sound of a big V/8 rather then a V/6 coming out of the exhaust, but once you hit the pedal and that turbo spooled up, what a KICK IN THE ASS!

Twin Turbo 3.6 shown in the Jay Leno Camaro put down 425hp.
I think GM was a little surprised at Ford's inititiave to turbocharge everything.
I will say this. Every major powertrains engineer that works on the current Ecotec Family 0 and 1 engines (going from 1.2 to 2.4 liters) and GM's High Features V6's (2.8, 3.0, 3.6) all originated from Gen III and/or Gen IV V8 design and development. The current Chief Engineer on the 2.0T series engines came directly out of SBC development.
