Joined the Marine Corps
Just contracted a few weeks ago. I should be leaving for bootcamp towards the end of May. Pretty much ready and know what to expect but any advise would be great. Joined the reserves so my MOS is Radar Artillery Operator. Anyone know someone who is in this field in any branch of service?

basic training sucks! it sucks more if you are in the marine corps!
rewarding only upon completion
so work hard, fight hard, eat a ****load, and dont go in pretending you'll "get better with time". BE PREPARED. Quit smoking if you smoke NOW.

Welcome to the boring world or Field Artillery Ops Im an 0847(Field Artillery Meteorologist) from the same unit you are about to join. 3/14 in philly. All i can say is do what your told, when your told, and how your told to do it. Be confident and pay attention. MCt is a good time but you still have to listen and follow direction. Your time spent at Ft Sill, OK is gonna suck ass but youll make it through with or with out your liver . 3/14 is a good unit with a great group of guys. If you have any more questions feel free to contact me, Id be more than willing to give you any and all info that I can. Names David Miller in Sicklerville if you wanna facebook me.
Sincerely Sgt Miller, David

oh yea..., Im in 4-25 Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd brigade combat team, 10th mountain Division.
I came in as a motor transport operator, but since returning from deployment where I was strictly convoy security, I have been working in Armament.

Good luck but why not pick a job that you can use better in the Real world?? Did you pick this MOS or did the recruiter "Help" you choose it? If you could I would try to switch to Aviation Electronics. It gives you 60 Credits towards a Electronics Bachelors degree from just the schooling the Navy/Marines go through after boot Camp. I mean if Radar Artilary Operator is what you really want to do then go for it but its best to choose a job that will help you out in the future. Just my opinion and its based off of experience in this matter!!

I'm not sure what else to add that hasn't already been said but move with Speed Volume & Intensity and you'll be fine. Expect a lot of bs at the early stages, but anyone whos done it will swear to you it does get better. Its gonna be hot in Parris Island that time of the year and even hotter in North Carolina at MCT so make sure you hydrate don't be the one to receive the silver bullet, the friends you make there will never live it down.
I'm a 4671, Combat Videographer based out of Camp Pendleton. I put up with a lot of BS in my first year as a pipeliner (student) but since I hit the fleet its been gravy and I'm currently putting my officer package together for submission by summer time.

Fellow marine here, was with 1/11 bravo out of camp pendleton. I shot arty all over the world and loved it. Good luck at bootcamp, do what you are told, don't let their "games" mess with you and be a. Leader you will be ok. They always like to see you take charge. Good luck, keep us updated with things!

Thanks for all the input guys! At first I was not allowed to join the Marines since I am still living at home, but somehow I pulled if off with the help on my Dad and Recruiter, so I am fine with any job.
I had four Mos's to choose from - Machine Gunner, Motor T, Weather Man, and my mos of radar operator. My recruiter did look out to other reserve stations and they only had Cook and Motor T.
Thanks Sgt. I added you on Facebook. I do have questions for you about the actual Mos training and the reserve location.

What did you score on your asvab of you dont mind me asking?? ( spell Check).. I did 2 yrs recruiting in the Navy in Virginia as Temporary Active duty ( TAD) , Which you will see alot of no doubt, and everything is based on you asvab score. The Recruiters will try to fill there quota for the jobs that they need filled the most even if you scored higher then that job on your entrance exam. I scored a 72 on my test and my recruiter tried to get me into Aviation Ordance which is building bombs and loading them on planes. Thank God my brother was there to have my back and got me into Aviation Electronics.

Sorry for any errors, I am typing from my droid. I scored a 69. I wish I would have done a little better but I scored what I needed for my position.

The ASVAB score really doesnt matter because that just means you scored better than 69% of the people that took the test at the same time you did. What matters are your GT, El, and MM scores. You should be able to get those from the recruiter.

I know for the Navy anything above a 62 on the Asvab then you are qualified for an Electronics Rate or MOS.
