The Toyota (Scion) FT-86 II concept...
http://jalopnik.com/#!5793887/scion-...w-toyota-ft+86
Ok, I'm ready.
Been watching Toyota-Subaru working on this rwd fun machine for a while. Don't know if it's to tease the bejesus out of us, or for Toyota to claim they are a fun car company who's got more colors color besides beige.
The new concept out blows the original one out of the water, love the upswept back end look, the big grill, and above all the fact it's one of the first RWD layouts in 6 years, and the first good looking RWD layout in almost 12 years.
The downside: Subaru's one looks hot hot hot, but I'm sure Toyota doesn't want to be shown up, and it'll most likely come out watered down. Also, Toyota may not be the one selling it, rather it'll be Scion, which means the sticker price is what you pay, and I don't see this thing coming out at 18K, if it does, I will be shocked.
This car IMO could bring back a huge chunk of potential male buyers ( no offense, but the tC IS a sorority chicks car, and if you like the mini fridge xB with wheels, you have horrible taste.)
I would certainly be interested in one. I'm getting to that point where a 15 year old car is losing some of it's thrills for me, and I'd love to have a sporty, reliable car that doesn't have me on a 30 year payment plan to afford it.
I know I know, this is a Camaro/Firebird site, but it's also an automotive site, so I'm sure you gus got opinions outside of the norm for imports.

Putting my own brand alignment aside, this thing is still going to need some real balls (not just peak HP numbers for magazines and fan boys) to hang with the domestics in that category. I can say with certainty that I have never been impressed with a stock Asian factory RWD sports car. That includes the TT Supra, 300Z, S2000, G35, RX-7/8's, IS-F, LFA, 370Z, 3000GT/GTO etc. They talk the talk sometimes but do not walk the walk. Some of them are very, very good looking but do not deliver in the speed/fun department.
JMO. And I can guarantee I'm not being closed minded.

I hear ya, imports don't have that umph in the torque department. Euro cars don't as well, but that's more in the low end, mid and high they got it, but imports only seem to get it in the higher range. I can already see people swapping the engine for a 1uze or 2uze engine from a Lexus, that should fix that problem haha.
If Subie's coming out with one, I can only hope that the separation in brands is because Subie is going to make it AWD, where Toyota will remain RWD.
Also WBT, gotta remember I'm a v6 fanboy, so I'm not too familiar with this torque and horsepower you speak of, blasphomy in our books if you ask

Waait, so according to this you are more impressed with LT1 and LS1 f-bodies than an LFA? That car is pretty fugly, I'll give you that, but damn that's just laughable - not even considering the fact that you have not driven that thing (99.99% sure here). And how does LFA not deliver the speed, exactly?
I'm just bored over here.

You can change that number to 100%.
I knew when I typed that that somebody would say something, as I knew I was reaching. That's the one that certainly delivers the speed and performance but it's also very overpriced for what you are getting. Given the other cars in it's class (if you can go that far) it's not really all that. The big comparo that I've seen is between the R8 at $190,000 and the LFA at $375,000. And the LFA just edges out the R8 in some categories.
I did not say anything specific about LT1 and LS1 cars, or SVT Mustangs, though?

Honest question for you:
Given whatever time period and price point you want, what Asian RWD sports car was at the top of the heap over equivalent European and American cars?
|
No doubt it's overpriced and pretty ugly exterior wise, and I would not pay my money for it. In fact, there are plenty of cars that I would get before I would even think about the LFA. I just didn't agree with you on the whole "not impressive" and "does not deliver in the speed department".
LT1/LS1 thing was just to give some color to the "domestic" scene from the same time period as some of the cars you mentioned.
Honest Answer: I don't really like Japanese sports cars. Although, I'd love to have a TT Supra, or an NSX, but it wouldn't be left stock either, not for long anyways.
Another honest answer: If someone dangled two set of keys from an LFA and a ZR1, I would pick the uglier LFA, provided there was no cost to me. I just like the fact it's more rare (and that I could sell it and buy a Ford GT and a Ferrari)
There might be some that disagree with me, but we all know that I'm ok with that.
Cheers,

Yeah, I was unclear really about the speed vs. price and the other cars in it's class. Even the TT Supra and 300ZX could get up and go- but not really compared to other comparible vehicles. I guess I should have said the asain offerings in each class were not really "wow-ing" to me. Based on my limited knowledge of the car I can say that the LFA is certainly "fast and fun" but not as much as it should be for the price. I would do the same as you if presented with the LFA vs ZR1, actually. Take it and sell it, or take it because of some of the technological features on it- not because it's a top performer.
Does that make sense?

I think though comparing a 200hp 2800lbs 2+2 mild mannered sports car to the likes of cars such as the NSX ( first production car to use Titanium connecting rods, and was tuned to the likings of Ayrton Senna) Supra TT ( handles boat loads of power in stock bottom end) S2000 ( 50:50 weight distribution, and was normally compared to Porsche Boxter numbers without the Porsche Boxter price tag) and so on is comparing apples to oranges. I would catagorize this car more towards the Mazda Speed series and/or the Hyundai Genesis 2.0T. I think bang for your buck, you could squeeze maybe 240-260 after some mods, and it would make for a nice track day car. I certainly wouldn't compare it to a Miata, S2000, or another evenly weight distributed car until I see some numbers, but I doubt Toyota will be aiming to make this the next NASA or SCCA barn stormer if they may be targeting the younger crowd.

i would be really interested if it ran a mid to low 13 second q/m at 105+ i dont care about what power it makes as long at it moves(i.e....lightweight!)....knowing toyota, it will be underwhelming...so i'm hoping subie will pick up the ball that toyota will drop and make a real car for under 25k.

I like every angle except for the rear.....i can see how it's a neat design, but compared to the rest of the car it's way to busy.

you know its sad, but that cars lines and shape is more true to the pony car spirit than the new camaro is. gm needs to take notes. toss a v8 in that car and you have a winner.

Its a really cool looking car. Its called FRS I believe. It is a model only, and is more pipe dream than production.

It did look pretty neat but production will never look like that, if they ever follow up.
