GM SEMA- Camaro 1LE concept

inb4bigals

swiped verbatim form elsewhere. can't wait to see this at sema this week.

Quote:

Camaro 1LE Concept

Born in the Camaro’s third generation and refined further in the fourth generation as a road-racing performance package, the legendary 1LE option code designation returns to the Camaro as a concept intended to carve up road courses. While only a concept, it borrows production components from both the Camaro SS and forthcoming Camaro ZL1 to deliver a competition-ready package. Hash mark graphics on the front fender are pure Chevrolet racing cues, too.

Vehicle highlights:

- Victory Red exterior color, with flat black hood and hash mark extensions
- Satin black splitter, rocker panels, rear spoiler and outside mirrors
- Sport suspension featuring Magnetic Ride Control
- Electric power steering
- Six-speed manual close-ratio transmission
- Lightweight 20x10-inch (front) and 20x11-inch (rear) racing wheels (satin black)
- Goodyear® Eagle F1 Supercar G asymmetrical tires (from the ZL1)
- Brembo® six-piston front calipers, with two-piece front rotors, and four-piston rear calipers (Chevrolet Official Licensed Product)
- Dual exhaust outlets with ZL1-style active exhaust and diffuser
- Shock tower brace
- Chevrolet Accessories red engine cover
- Black leather interior with Light Stone stitching
- Graphite Silver door and instrument panel inserts
- ZL1 shifter with Light Stone stitching
- ZL1 flat-bottom steering wheel
- Chevrolet Accessories pedal kit

“The Camaro 1LE concept is all about the track,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Camaro. “It’s an all-out race car package that pays tribute to that special option from the past.”

If its all about track, then why does it still have radio, power windows, a/c, and the same heavy curb weight that the SS has. Yes it looks cool, but it isnt the same "stripper" track model it has been in the past...

Get used to it man - there will never be another Camaro like the 3rd / 4th gen 1LE cars. For the very small minority of us that would want one to use for it's intended purpose, it sucks, but if you want it that bad, you can always go the BIW route.

I like the concept, aside from the GS hash decals.

Not that particular steering wheel with the flat bottom, but that style yes. And all 2012 Camaros have the spoiler as standard.

A true 1LE package that could be put together quickly would be very easy:
1) FE4 upgraded suspension
2) Convertibles STB
3) Hurst shifter
4) ZL1's brakes
5) Deleting 100lbs of crap out of the car.

Did they really ever sell many 1LE cars though?

I don't like how these once discrete RPO codes are now going to be full blown decorated models. The ZL1 was a extremely low production model as we know, only 69 were made in 1969. The 1LE, historically was also a model that was low production, though not as low as the ZL1. The original 1LE didnt have any badges that identified it as such, in fact the original 1LE didnt have much of anything! The "Camaro in White" that GM offered for a while (not sure if they still do) is a true nod to the original 1LE, which includes a bare chassis of new Camaro, thats all. IMO they should just stick to their common RPO codes, Z28, SS, RS, Berlinetta, etc.. Idk just a rant

I agree but it's probably just to copy like the Mustang does.

Sooo....what the price tag on one of these? to me, besides a paint scheme, shocks swiped from the Vette, and a few other suspension/brake goodies......it's a SS package Camaro. Give me ten minutes with that car and the designers, and I'll give it a name worth calling it the 1LE package.

To me, this car is nothing more then another Camaro to sit in someones temperature controlled garage, waiting for it to hit Barret Jackson's block instead of hitting the track

I understand in this world, no one would buy a radio delete optioned car ( Cept me) but at least create light weight panels, and front seats of Kevlar/Carbon.

This car isn't targeted for the track day driver, in fact none of these new Camaro's are, they just keep getting built for the mid life crisis who couldn't afford a Corvette ( or is too fat for one )

It really depends if somebody decides to create a specific racing series for these cars. Canada did it years ago with the 1LE or B4C so the cars actually were used on the race track. But GM never made the options public knowledge like they do now. So yes, some investors will buy these cars and park them away and then lose their investment when it doesn't pan out.

Well another thing, if they're considering this as the road racing car, what will the Z28 optioned car be targeted for?

This is a "concept" not a production model.

The days of no radio, no A/C, no options are LONG gone. I won't say NO ONE wants a car like that because maybe 10 people in the world do and 8 of them can't afford a car like this, lol. The fact is people still want their options...and if they don't they'll build the car themselves. Lets say the car costs $50K(just using that figure as an example), most people will have the mentality that they can buy a SS for $40K, build a better track monster and STILL have radio, AC, etc. Hell that's what I would do, spending $40K for a car with no A/C or any creature comforts? F THAT.

Yeah, I was going to say that. No A/C? OK. No heat? That means no defroster on fall nights, but OK. No radio? No way. I did a DC to Central NJ drive with no radio- that sucked badly.
