Jeep Wagoneer full size- tell me about them

I've always wanted one of these cars and although I really want a long term project car, and eventually a tow rig, I don't have the time for it now. Nonetheless, I'm considering it in case the right example crosses my path to swap a modern GM drivetrain in. Many people have thrown iron-LS motors in them so there is a ton of info and even parts needed for the swap. Anyway, any experience with these cars? With a suspension and brake fresh-up and newer motor, can these things safely pull my camaro on a trailer long distances? Am I crazy considering I am as handy as a toddler?

This is what got the wheels turning: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/2783706208.html

Thanks. That led me to this: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/misc/buyfaq.html Which is gold. I'm going to be in Phili next week. I might go check out the car for kicks. Price seems to be right.

Definitely a nice price - seems to be in pretty decent shape. Those are some really great Jeeps, usually hard to find good deals on them. Solid drivetrain / axles, look great with a small lift on them, LS swap would certainly be fun!

Just look it over very very carefully for rust.

I agree, there is no need for that.

they are awesome...when jeep was on top,,,now their crap(owner of a jeep now) besides the wranglers. wagonmasters.com sells refurbished ones. only issues are rust (quarters/floors/etc) and gas mileage (360).

Agreed. Wrangler owners scavenge these trucks for their Dana 44 axles because they very strong in stock form for a light truck, and work well with up to a 37 inch tire. Those axles plus the 360 V8 equals awesome as-is; swapping in a nice 6.0 Vortec would only make it awesomer. Yeah...that's right...I said awesomer.

If you get one just make sure it doesnt have the vacuum disconnect axle or plan on swapping the front.

I believe the 84-85 was the only ones with the vacuum disconnect. I'm looking for one a little newer than that. The guy won't call me back on the one i posted up about. Its a shame because good deals like that are few and far between with these cars.

Too expensive and not that serious. Wish GM continued with this project: http://green.autoblog.com/2009/03/11...probably-dead/
