You should prolly check on that.

ok, now i got a question, i basically gave up tryign to network my 2 pcs and i dont feel like buyign a new modem just to get my picture files off my old comp...so... im gonna move all the files i want onto 1 hard drive and pull that and put the whole drive into my current computer. Sounds good? i hope so. anyways.
My old comp has 3 hard drives, C, D, and E.
C is the main with a capacity of 1.99GB(385MB free)
D is the secondary with a capacity of 1.52GB(1.44GB free)
E is the last one with a capacity of 494MB(494MB free)
since i wanna keep the comp semifunctional after i yank the hard drive, i wont take C drive... i was thnking of using D. which most of my files are already on. good choice? lol

Once i have all the files moved, and i open the case...how do i knows which drive is which? lol, and once i find it and remove it, how do i install it in my surrent computer? i need some assistance, lol.

For starters, do you know for sure that there are physically three hard drives inside the computer? It's easy to divide one physical drive so that it acts as many seperate drives.
I would open the computer first and verify the existance of three drives. If there are three, then read the labels on each - most list the size (in MB or GB) of the storage capacity. That will tell you which drive is which. If there are three drives (or two for that matter), then your idea will work fine. Just make sure that you check the jumper settings of ALL of your drives anytime you add or remove a drive from a box. Jumper settings should also be on the label of each drive.

haha, see im glad i asked, i opened it and only see 1 Hard drive(POS), shows i never looked, lol. Well anyway, i just moved all the files i wanted to the 1 part of the HD then. Myabe itll be easier to find them later on. Where do the jumper setting come into play? ive never really swapped parts other than modems and game/video cards. I also have another hard drive from the comp i took apart earlier today, is it possible to use that as well, and then truly have 2 or 3 functioning hard drives? i say 2 beacuse once i get the files i need of the one, i wanna put ti back in the old comp to keep it functioning to some extent.

Smokin - did you open the case? Do you have 3 physical drives or 2 or 1?

Smokin, have you looked into getting an external hard drive?
you can transfer all the files onto that and keep it off to the side til you need them.

This isn't exactly what you are doing, but it will prolly help: http://www.mysuperpc.com/hdu/jumper_pins.shtml

 | By the sound of his old computer, I seriously doubt that it has USB 2.0 or Firewire capability. And USB 1.0/1.1 external hard drives are super slow....

hmm, ok, seems simple enough, but just to be safe, i tried putting an even older hard drive i pulled form a comp today into my old dell, so far so good, its booting up now. if that goes well and i can grab files of there, then ill fell confident doign the swap into my good comp

If not, you need to reboot and try clicking the Del, Esc, F2 buttons. It depends on the BIOS how to get into it. And you have to click whatever button before it starts listing drives as it's booting (I normally just start repeatedly hitting the button once it's started to reboot).
