A somber reminder to be careful…

This was posted up at Pro-Touring today. While very, very sad, maybe it can act as a reminder to be safe working on your car.

I actually shake my car up on the jackstands before I go under it. I used to do the same with cars/trucks on lifts if the vehicle was odd to setup (like vans and such) The lift was low to the ground, of course

yeah never get under a car with just a regular spare tire car jack i was on the side of the road once with a broken fuel line and used my jack that was in the car. luckily i was smart enought to take the wheel off and lay it under the car as a precation cus just as i was sliding out from under the car the jhack gave way was quite a scare! But jack stands and wheel chocks are a must we have plenty around my house!

Something like that happened with my dad when he was 21, except he didnt die. His first instinct was to catch his '64 Belvediere before it fell on him, it sent both his armbones through his wrist, fractured a femur, and busted a kneecap. He was paralyzed for 2 years (that was back in the 60's before modern technology)... this is a fear I have when Im working on the car... vitals knows, when we did my headers, i put almost anything under my car to make sure it didnt fall on us.

if i dont use jackstands, i use a 2 ton hydraulic floor jack WITH a basic spare tire jack also in place as a back up, just in case.

back at my old job, a car on an old center post hydraulic lift dropped about 2 feet while i was under it, it put my head into my shoulder and knocked me to my knees. Thats was 6 years ago, 2 years ago i was in physical therapy for severe nerve damage in the arm/back which they attribute to that, and ill never be 100%...

I hated center post lifts. Ever seen a car slide off a lift? Scares the crap out of you, even from across the bays.

I had a bottle jack just give up one day. Working fine one moment, dead the next.

at my old shop the single psot lift used to spin around ha ha!!! and yeah two post car lifts can be dangerous if you forget to unlock one side as the lift is coming down cuz the car will start to tilt really fast! Bottle jacks are not safe i have had 20 ton bottle jacks give out! and they are not stable because they simply don't have the width of a floor jack.

wow, I once had my car up on jackstands and one of them BROKE literally 30 seconds after I crawled out from underneath the car. Ever since then whenever I have to get under my car I use every thing I can to keep it up. Jackstands, ramps under the wheels, and even leave the jack under it.

I do the jackstands/ramps move as well, and sometimes just leave the jack in place, more for oil changes so I can get in and out, lower the car quickly, but added saftey.
I really wish that my job had a little bit more loose rules regarding working on your car. I would love to be able to use those lifts.

I use the 9000 lb two post lifts we have at work. locks every 6 inches or so. raise it up, lower it onto the locks and you're ready to go.

Yes...I know. I want to do several things, such as my SS brake hoses, use the air gun and stuff...nope, gotta crank up the jack, jackstands and ramps in the cold garage.
