engine
ok so yesterday i got the iroc all put together, pics soon, and tried to start it. took a bit to build fuel pressure, naturally, had to fill the carb and such. then all i could get out of her was a pop here and there and maybe a almost start then immediate stall. i was told to check firing order, its perfect, and i kept messing with the dist. to adjust timing but the most i could get is a few pops then stall.
the carb is getting plenty of fuel, it caught fire twice..big thanks to my bro to put it out haha. I closed the idle screws then opened them one turn, this way i knew it was getting some gas but not flooding.
I think its narrowed down to the ignition coil or somewhere in that area. wires are used but they work, plugs are brand new ac delco's gapped to .045in, the coil is a few years old and i dont remember if it was bad or not when i took it out of the old motor.
any ideas? btw 305, 650 demon carb

Did you take the distributer out? Sounds like your timing is off.

if you turn the motor over and get the timing marks on the crank pulley aligned , you can than take the cap off , and the plug wire in the cap 1 or 6 needs to be in the area the of the cap the rotor is pointing at , if not you need to get that correct first , turning it counter clockwise it advancing it keep going counterclockwise 1 inch at a time till it fires than set timing to what ever < -- jz

did that, timing is dead on. Thats the first thing i made sure of before i put the motor in. the motor is weird tho, the rotor points at cyl 8 when cyl 1 is at tdc. i tried it several other ways and the dist only sits in that direction.

yeah thats what i thought as well, but the dist does not sit on the intake any other way. it always has the 1/4 gap until the rotor is pointing at the number 8 cyl, then it sits flush on the intake and can be bolted down. I thought that was weird too, but it was oriented like that in the other car that it was running in.
and its kinda hard to put marks when you cant keep the original dist. ive done this before so i was very careful to make sure it was right, but i will look at the dist orientation again and try to get to sit down 180* out thanks for the help so far, im prob not going to get to touch it till maybe thursday or friday

My guess is you're just not lining up with the oil pump drive correctly. Turn the oil pump drive with a screwdriver until your dizzy lines up correctly with the #1 plug at TDC.

update:
ok i tried flipping the dizzy around. no dice. timing is and was good enough to at least start it and get it running. so i took my dizzy, cap, and coil to sirico bros in ledgewood, im really good friends with the owner, he tested them all for me, came back and said the ignition control module is bad, he lent me one. put the car back together estimated where the timing would be and finally kicked over to get some pops. after messing with the carb and idle and timing it finally starts up and idles on its own.....but....it has a wicked misfire somewhere. the whole car shakes and no matter what i do with carb i cant get it go away. the engine has very little power as well. i turned the steering wheel a little and it basically stalled out.
im thinking its two things: wires and plugs, but the plugs are new ac delcos. OR i could have messed up the roller rockers when i put them on. Im pretty sure that the rockers are good, i tightened them down to zero or little lash then went 1/2 turn past that and put the set screw down. I have to check it again tomorrow, short of taking the valve cover off with the motor running does anyone have a good rule of thumb to set them?
but i think that is my problem, i cant get the idle too much lower than 1k otherwise it will stall, and the motor runs pretty hot as well, only took 5 min to open the 180 thermo.
sorry for the length and thanks

did you talk to paul or rick about this -- it does sound like you might have wires crossed after all of this -- or a crack in the cap and it arking over to another cylinder -- jz

and i just read that my guess you have the valve adjustment all wrong -- if its a stock cam you can do 1/2 of the motor at a time with a correct explanation do you have a work shop book or are you winging it --???? -- jz

plugs i havent gotten to yet, i am going to check them tomorrow.
I spoke to both paul and rick, i made sure i was timing it right, i checked it a few times before cranking...firing order is 18436572?
as for the valves, yes i did one half the motor at a time, then rotated it to cyl #6 tdc then did the other half of the motor. from what im told its a stock 350 cam...from what i dont know :/ yeah there was only a certain number of rockers that could be done at #1 tdc and the rest is done at #6 tdc. thats what i was told, i dont know the numbers off the top of my head but i had it written down.
oh and i forgot to mention, both valve covers have the breather in them..on the passenger side of the motor its throwing out a lot of blue smoke, like oil burning..any thoughts?
