If i understand it right it is those stupid rules that gave us the suv craze. I think nissan figured it out and gave us the 4 door pathfinder and off the OEs went.

I've had several older 4Runners and some were wagons and some were trucks with DMV. I think it depends on who handles the initial registration. If a dealer does it then it's whatever they pick. If an owner does it then it could be different. But once the vehicle is registered, it can't be changed. Truck registration is more expensive than wagon. I'm surprised insurance categorizes it as a truck though.

I rented one of these once and drove it to Maine. I am about 6'5" and I had plenty of headroom, but the windshield was so low that I had to slouch to see the car in front of me, and sitting at a light, my wife had to tell me when the light was green. I felt like I needed one of those old-school stoplight reflectors that you used to see on the dash of cars from the 40s-50s. I'm all for cruising around in a chopped street rod, with all the bad visibility, straight-axle bump steer, bias-ply madness, but not as my daily driver.
Too bad, too, because I think they look neato. The one we rented was silver, and my wife said it looked like a trout. Maybe if I could get one with power seats that adjust lower, it would be okay.

the dealer considers it a wagon, thats probably what itll get registered as. but just allstate considers it a truck. once I drop my 79, my insurance will only be going up about $200 to add a full coverage vehicle.

Civic, no, Subie Wagons yes.
Civic hatch back has a lip around the hatch area, so its not a "flat" loading floor.
See how its flat, from the lip of the hatch to the floor?
Pontiac Vibe
Here is a Civic hatch, where you would have to lift over the lip to store things
And again...flat loading floor for the Magnum

Crazy or not, Im not the EPA, and thats what the EPA used to think was a truck.
See, if you can get cars like the HHR, PT, and other cars that get good gas milage, and its grouped in with the trucks that get 20 or less, it brings the CAFE of the trucks for that company up.
CAFE is Corperate Average Fuel Economy.
Minivans could also be considerd a truck, but Im not sure how that works as most of them dont have flat loading floors.

yea, and it doesnt bother me, as long as the sticker on the window is close to what the true mpg is.
How do they get around not having to have mpg ratings for trucks?

They dont. MPG ratings should be on all cars and trucks. I think the ONLY cars that dont need one are the ones that are over a certain GVW like the H1 Hummer. Its the same reason why there are zero air bags in an H1...on top of teh fact that it was never designed for them.
The old system was two CAFE sections. Cars and Trucks. If GM had a fleet of 5 door hatchbacks, all with flat loading floors (and Americans didnt have this adverse reaction to hatchbacks andbought them), and all of them got 35mpg or better, GM could advertise that they have the best average fuel economy of any truck line in the world.
Anyway, back to this car. I was just reading up on GMI some member reviews, and a lot of people really liked it.
I hope that on Delt 2, they give it a bit more modern flare while keeping the retro look, increaes quality of materials to match the Cruze, as well as 6spd auto.
Cool car...when are you coming down to go for a ride?

this is why i pushed her so hard in that direction. now all i have to do is meet her and get her to let me drive it. then maybe i'll get one of my own (wife is into it, and she's a little tired of the jeep), but it'll have to be an SS. and i like the version without the windows in back.
nice score, melissa.

shouldn't it go down or remain the same? you are replacing a v8 sports car with a 4 cyl wagon...

I paid MORE for my 4-cyl dsm than I do for my F-body. Didn't change anything on the insurance policy besides the name. You never know with NJ insurance companies.

how did i know?
i got it, insurance goes up because of full coverage. well, you have to have full if you have a loan on it, right? that is one of the sucky things about cars in NJ, loan means full coverage. once the loan is paid off, you'll be able to drop it down. assuming you keep it, that is...
my wife was kicking and screaming about full coverage on the jeep (we had a deal where we split all expenses down the middle, but we were each responsible for our own insurance). it didn't have a loan, but i wasn't taking any chances with something i just spent 20k on. her old car was an 80s something olds, so she went from liability only to full coverage. i'm wondering if having full on it now is too much, though. it's 7 years old already.
