Hyundai Genesis

Seeing all these commercials for the Genesis has gotten me thinking about it. I got to see it up close for the first time in Philly. It really is a nice looking little car. The lines are all smooth and complete, nothing about it really looks out of place, yet nothing about it really stands out.

They had a sedan open for the public to sit in and of course I had to take a turn after all the hype. The interior was a bit surprising, much nicer than I expected. Not that there was anything spectacular in it, just that it was nicely laid out and clean.

The seats were comfortable, no big bolsters or anything, but still supportive, basically what one would expect to find in a good sports sedan. Once again, they were not anything that would stand out in the market, but still nice.

The one gripe I can say I have with the way the car is being delivered to market is the transmission. According to the info plaque they had next to the car there is no manual transmission available in the sedan and in the coupe a manual will only be available with the higher output engine.

For a Hyundai, I think it is a great achievement to even get such a vehicle to market considering their image in America. I do not know if the world is ready for them though.

The car is very middle of the road, which would be fine if it was brought forward by a brand with vehicles traditional priced in that range or a history or sports vehicles. Coming from a company that is known for building little, reliable, econo boxes, I think it needs something to make it stand out a lot more than it currently does. It needs something radical enough to convince a lot of people to change their perception of the brand and in the product I saw at the Philly Auto Show doesn't seem to have that.

I love the way the coupe looks. The sedan looks like every other sedan on the road today.

I was somewhat surprised at the size. Seeing the rest of the luxury-sport coupe and sedan market going bigger, the Genesis is about the same size an M3 was 5 or more years ago.

Genny is a LOT bigger then any 3 series!! You need to check your glasses.
The current 3 series is the size of a Cobalt sedan.
The Genny Sedan is NOT a sports sedan. It was designed to be Hyundai's first adventure into the midsized luxury segment.
America has nothing to combat this car. CTS is the closest thing, but the Genny has a V8 option where the CTS doesnt.
The 300 is the next closest, but quality falls WAY short.
The new Linc MKS isnt even a solid CTS fighter, so its the farthest away.
No American car maker has a car to trump this.

If the Genesis is an attempt at competing on luxury alone, #1 it is nice but not nearly that nice, #2 they should tell the magazines to stop comparing it to sports models.

I havent seen them compare it to anything. Hyundai talks about how it offers more room then the 7 series, has more power then the S class, etc etc.
The Genny coupe...now thats a different story. That car is designed to fight the G37. Hell, it looks like one.

I can't see how it has more room than a 7. It really feels like a medium/small car on the inside. Maybe there is some more volume in it, but the useful space isn't really there.

Ive never looked at the numbers, but thats what they say.
This car is a solid hit for Hyundai. I still cannot explain how GM couldnt make a car this good with the equipment it has for this price.

It could just be the feel of the car to me. It does not seem like that big a car. It was bigger than what was around it, but it is sitting down stairs with Mitsu, Scion, and other little car brands around it and it didn't seem to be much larger than their offerings.

It may be a good car, but I highly doubt a Hyundai is going to lure any BMW, Caddy or Benz owners.

Especially not the "brand shoppers".

I did see a few of them on the road, they look pretty nice! I think they did well.

The didn't launch the car to chase Bimmer and Benz directly. The people you go after at the price point are those who desire the B'n'B quality, features, and prestige but can not afford it.

I checked a Genesis out at Colonial Caddy, Tim said it best "Middle of the road". It's nice but not that nice, and correct me if I'm wrong but the sticker was $38k for the V-6? No thanks, give me a G8 GT, hell I could almost get a GXP for that money. The '06 STS-V on the floor was only $35k Certified. And thats a real car. IMO

The numbers I saw for a loaded Genesis Coupe was $27k, a loaded 370z is $37k. Close in style, not in price.

$38K for a Hyundai? Sorry, but that is absurd. If I'm going to spend close to $40K on a car, it's definitely not going to be a Hyundai.

I read some articles online and in magazines with the total price around $27,xxx loaded. A decked out 370z is $39,xxx, that price is from their commercial.

Either way, I personally rather have a loaded Genesis in the high $20's than a base 370Z in the high $20's

The Genny Coupe with the turbo 4 cyl starts at like 22-23k. 210hp
Genny Coupe with teh V6 starts at 27-28k. 300hp out of a 3.8 liter V6
No V8 Available.

The Genny Sedan comes with the 3.8 standard and at under 33k. 4.6 making a range topping 375hp comes in under 38k.

If the G8 had a few more features from Oz, it would have put this car away. But then again, if the G8 had thoes features, it would destroy the the CTS's image as well.

They should let the G8 have the features have get over the losing effort to shove Caddy off as a performance marque. The G8 already moves more units so why not work off of the winning side of the trend?

G8 sells no where near the CTS's numbers.

I was thinking in terms of V8 powered actual sports car models.

I think it is time for GM to abandon the Caddy as a performance marque concept. The cars are too pricey even compete against cars with in GM's own line, much less the rest of the world's offerings.

If they are afraid to step up the G8 GT because it will hurt CTS-V sales, they will just lose market share on both. What is the benefit of that?
