advice on parting out a car

I need some advice from everyone who decided to part their car out instead of selling it out right. how long did it take for the car to fully be parted out? how much of a PITA is it? any other advice you can give me would be appreciated. I'm getting no interest in my car I think the parts in it would be more marketable than the car itself..

long time. you get alot of dickbeaters saying interested and whatnot in parts... best have a garage where you can dismantle it all first.

Takes a while, you need a lot of room and a lot of time to deliver parts/meet up/ship stuff.

where have u advertised the car... every car ive sold has been off autotrader.com, the only way to sell a car on a car forum is to sell it CHEAP! lol. also for your asking price i would expect the hood/gfx be painted... hit up macco, then ask 6k on autotrader, i didnt read the whole ad, but a matching set of wheels is always a bonus

I have new wheels to put on...I need spacers though. I mean the car also overheats and I don't want to be a dick and sell it to someone...I have a tendency to be honest and upfront about everything. I'll call maaco sometime

but another question when u guys parted out the cars did u get lowballed alot or get sonewhere close to the price u were asking for?

You will lose money on parts you bought new, and you should expect lowballs. If you have something that's rare or that you think you can get top dollar for than go with Ebay.

Parting a car is a PITA.

I haven't parted a car myself, but the guy who I bought the motor for my camaro off of is still parting his car a long time after he started. It takes a long time. If you've got the space, it may be in your interest to remove what you feel is good, and store it in the attic or basement. When someone needs something you'd have it ready to go. Once you get it that far there are scrappers who would probably pay a bit for whats left. Also, it may work for you selling just the drivetrain, and selling the car as a roller.

All in all, not sure if you would come out ahead of what your inital investment was. I think parting is more of a quick way to make a couple bucks.

Indeed. When I was selling my car I only 2 people came and looked at it, one of them bought it. However I had at least 6 people telling me they were gonna come, and I should hold the car for them & I should consider it sold....

The reason I didn't want to part it out is because it would take too long, and I didn't have a place where I could do it. I'm sure I would have gotten more money if I parted it out though. Just from pro 5.0 and TT2's I got 650 bucks. But yea I'd say it would be a major PITA.

You may have some luck to on some forums pulling your engine and trans and selling it as a roller.

the thing is i really dont have a place to pull the motor. and figure a roller would cost what...a grand? maybe get 2500 tops for the motor? there are other things in the car worth some cheddar too...guages, head unit, leather 4th gen interior mint condition

If you want to part it because of the problem it has then that's the WRONG reason IMO. If you need the cash then that's a different story.

well i kind of didnt want to post this but i lost my job last sunday and im sort of forced to sell it as my savings will run out before i know it. but im in a debacle here..

i dont want to sell it whole BECAUSE of the problem it has, it overheats...i cant find the problem, and cant afford to throw more money into it right now..

i also dont want to part it out because i dont have the time or patience to deal with low ballers but there are alot of goodies in it i think would sell easy its the little stuff that would give me a problem.

haha its arrite i know you didnt mean to bill...but thats not a bad idea, im sure i can find someone to buy some of the top dollar things and swap in stock or cheaper versions. thats not a bad idea at all.

It's really hard to come up with a recommendation for what to do. I saw what you're asking for the car, I think it might be a little hard to come up with that by parting it. The best suggestion I can make since money is going to get tight is entertain as many offers for the complete car as possible, and whatever you can get from it you should spring for it. It'll probably be less than what you want, but right now its a buyers market. You could turn around that loss and get a killer deal on something else, and save the difference to help you through your tough time.

u are absolutely right. i know my asking price is wayy up there i was expecting someone to lowball which nobody has. i want to fix it to sell it but dont have the cash / skills. i dont want to say 'selling as is' as that is sketchy as hell.
