Will Insurance Cover a Repaint To a Different Color?

Hey guys,
A former student of mine just had his 2010 Camaro keyed by some little thugs in his neighborhood. They got both sides and the front and back bumpers too. Anyhow, now he's thinking that since they'll probably have to paint the whole car, would they do it a different color? He's thinking about having it done satin black, instead of it's original gloss black. Thoughts/ideas?

Thanks in advance!

1. No
2. satin black will look bad and kill resale.

On a car that new it will look like its getting ready for a complete paint job and most people would figure that it must have really been walloped. It he plans on keeping the car forever that's fine, but on a resale somebody has got to figure about $5,000 to refinish the car. Just another thought, if they (the thugs) had fun keying it once, it might be more fun to do it again right after he has it refinished. LOL

There is a 5th gen painted flat black on here http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48448

I'm not too crazy about it. I don't know much about insurance but if they have to sand it all down and repaint the entire car I don't see why they would have a problem unless your doing a drastic color change. If it's just a few panels I can't see insurance paying for an entire repaint.

They're job(the insurance company) is to bring it to pre-loss condition. They're write an estimate to repair the scratches and repaint whatever panels need it...if the owner wants to change colors any additional costs will need to be paid by the owner.

....and in before Mark says the owner is entitled to all of the leftover materials used by the shop.

Well, these kids apparently got every panel but the roof (only because they were 8 years old and couldn't reach), so they will have to paint almost the entire car; some of the scratches are really deep. And thanks for the link above - here's the pic of the flat-black 5th-gen. It looks evil IMO.

1. that looks like crap
2. they didn't scatch the jams, inside the trunk, under to hood, etc. Changing color right is a lot of work.

A 2010 Camaro is not, and will not ever be, a rat rod. Gloss paint all the way.

That pic was just as reference to what it would look like, I didn't read the forum to see what material it was. I'm not crazy about the way it looks. Makes it look cheap.

IMO some cars look good with matte black paint, not just rat rods. It takes a certain type of car to pull off a color/finish/vinyl like that.

If he is serious I would get an estimate to repair and an estimate to have it painted the way he wants. Then pay the difference.

I agree guys, but it is his car, and his idea. I'm not really sure if I'd rock something in that color, but whatever. Thanks for the help!

Well insurance won't pay any additional costs the shop will charge to change the color. So unless he has a wad of $$$ burning a hole in his pocket tell him to save his $.
