you are looking at the equation wrong man.
lets say 1 million people drive per day. out of that 1 million 20k people die from accidents.
now lets say out of that 1 million people driving there are 20k people street racing. Of those 20k people street racing 12k of them died.
now lets look at the numbers. 20k people of 1 million is a lesser percentage of people dying than the 12k of the 20k.
how is this possible??? because more people that are driving...albeit safely or dangerously, there are simply more people. this makes the risk factor actually less than those that are actually taking the larger risk of which more people get seriously hurt or caused death from the more dangerous activity.
whens the last time you heard ''oh they were street racing and it resulted in a minor fender bender.'' almost never...because a higher percentage of those that crash street racing are caught in serious life threatening accidents. those that were speeding (say 65 in a 55) have a better chance of surviving someone clipping your back end.

Speeding-related crashes resulted in 13,192 fatalities in 2004. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, 2005)
When speed increases from 40 mph to 60 mph, the energy released in a crash more than doubles. (IIHS, 2003)

i wasnt speaking real freaking figures goddammit.
using your figures though from 40-60 the energy from the crash doubles.....no how many people are street racing from 40-60???? look at youtube....most of the races START FROM A ROLL at that speed....so how much do you think theyre multiplying that figure (double the energy double the risk from speeding) and then EXCEEDING that figure.

I understand that completly. It just kills me that everyone is on people for street racing and what not but no one cares about just speeding.
I know that it would be safer if there was no street racing on the roads and everyone seems to agree but I find it funny that no one replies when I ask if the roads would be safer if everyone obeyd the Speed limit? Well would they?
I do 10 over pretty much everywere. I still get passed like I am standing still. Sometimes I have to speed up even faster so that the semi behind me, who wants to do 80, is trying to run me over. Its sad that I have to speed up to feel safer driving which in turns makes my stopping distance shorter and my reaction time shorter also.

Like I said before your risk goes up the faster you go.

thats all we wanted you to admit. that street racing is more dangerous than speeding. speeding is dangerous, no one is debating that, but saying its AS dangerous as street racing is just.....forgive the pun...

I saw someone post before
Is it worth you life and others to street race?
With speeding the cause behind 1/3 of the nations fatal crashes I would have to ask.. Is it worth your life and others to speed?

So would it be safer if everyone did the speed limit?

In theory but that doesn't negate the fact that most people are complete idiots when they drive, doesn't negate the fact that people are distracted all of the time.
As far as your other question, if you're going to do the the speed limit then you should be in the left lane, period.
Speeding and aggressive driving are different. You can be doing 70 in a 55 and not causing ANY harm, ANY danger to anyone....yet you could just as easily put lives in danger by being a douche bag while still doing the speed limit. To just say speeders cause most accidents is ridiculous.

Yes, that's it!
I live in a world of working and manipulating statistics. I deal with them every day. Speeding is dangerous. So is crossing the street. Or eating a juicy burger. Minimizing risk is what it's all about. Nasty hit on this with his explanation. If you are speeding you are stacking the deck against you a little. If you race on the street you are stacking it against you more, especially at night.
You can also get into physics of vehicles under slight vs. heavy acceleration, working in weight transfer, tire contact, etc if you want to be crazy about it.

Did you forget hes from PA Mark. I have yet to travel up 476 and not see some idiot with PA plates pacing a tractor trailer thats in the right hand lane, oblivious to the 20-30 cars bumper to bumper in both lanes behind them.

So should people doing the speed limit be in the right lane or left lane?

Right lane, I corrected myself and the typo I had up there. That's the law BTW(since you're throwing the law around like it mean something).
