You don't have to spend over $100 on a pump. The Melling Select pumps that I have mentioned before are only in the mid-$60 range.
Here's a list of all the Melling Select pumps on Jegs, I'm sure you'll find them all on Summit for a similar price if you look: http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...0002_751586_-1
Also, check to make sure that shaft will fit in a stock 400 block. Some of the aftermarket shafts require machining of the block before you can use them, and some don't.

you should be fine as long as you don't let the motor run low on oil. That's the setup I'm going with.....8 1/4" deep pan from moroso with a melling select pump.

I'm willing to bet that the tech is full of crap. I hope you got his name and number so you can call him back and scream at him when you get one of the new casting designs.
An M55 is an M55.......

M55 is not the casting number damn it , its the part number the casting number is else were on the pump... M55 is the typical PART # for small block Chevy's and 4.3l V6s... that one should work fine...its an M-55 High Volume pump. I've sold a few of them in my time at advance auto...actually they have both the M55 and M55HV IN STOCK
