Came across something while prepping the 86 (Pictures)

So yea, I started sanding down the quarter panel on the 86 and came across 2 nasty looking things...


They are both on the roof of the 1/4 panel ... looks like it twisted, rusted and broke (lack of SFC maybe?). Its only that small area tho, and was wondering if bondo would do the trick. OR how should I tackle this flaw and what supplies would I need?


The second picture, I sanded down til I saw bare metal. Its not that deep actually, but its deep enough to be noticed. Would the red paste bondo work?

neither of them look bad. the first one is a common spot for water to puddle and make little rust spots in the weather stripping. pull up the trim and weather stripping and get it cleaned and primered.
nothing to sorry about in either spot. just get them sanded and primered and it will be all good.

Yes, stress cracks from lack of SFCs. I had them on my 86Z and my 87 TA. Put SFCs in both and then had cracks fixed & welded by body show. The Z got a 300hp 350 & 6speed and never cracked again. The 87 got stolen before I could break in the motor (yes I cried).

I know the bolt in's are cheaper but if your doing any performance mods outside of bolt one, go for the weld in ones. You won't be disppointed.

If no engine mods, just sand, naval jelly, clean and bondo. All fixed.

Yea I really dont understand how it would stress crack, it runs 17 seconds in the 1/4

Yea Im going for the complete suspension package. The motor/tranny is coming out next weekend for sure, if not prolly the weekend after. No more 305

For those of us who are newbies, what are SFC's?

What tools, paint strippers, supplies did you use to pull off the paint? I'd like to try my hand at body prep for paint on the driver side quarter panel where a little rust has bubbled the paint from beneath, just over the wheel well. Common spot for rust.

SFC = Sub Frame Connector Basically a bar that you can bolt or weld in that runs down each side of the car. They do wonders to strengthen the body.

Cause the subframes are weak as ****. Any torquing flexes them. My 86Z had the stress cracks and I had the low output LG4 305. I couldn't beat a hyundai scoupe with that car even with the 3.73's. But the cracks were there.

SFCs are a must, especially with the t-tops.

If you Bondo the stress cracks, you HAVE to get sub frame connectors. Otherwise, you'll take a turn too hard and the bondo will crack and fall off.
