header install
gonna put on my hedman midlengths soon, im gonna need a custom y pipe done, and while im at it i think im gonna replace my hollowed cat for a highflow cat..what should i look for?
i think im going to midas for the y pipe cause there right down the street from my garage and im already gonna get pulled over 3 times on the way there with my open hedders screamin down the road...which reminds me anyone think flex tubing will hold up enough in place of a y, to get me to the shop?
Also, does anyone have or know any instructions on a header install on a 3rd gen 350tpi, any tips would be great too, it would help a lot thanks
also should i run one or two cats?

Didn't they come with a Y?
Or can't you buy one?
Just does not seem economical to have a shop fab up one when you could easily buy one...

+1 my midlengths came with a y. if you just want to slap a cat on, magnaflow will suite.

midas around here sucks so bad. I ended up going to meinike(sp?) for a lot cheaper labor to weld my cutout in. Idk if it's the same way everywhere, but meinike>midas.

Definately go with a Magnaflow Cat and I would check Hedman for a Y-pipe befoe I had one fabbed.

If hes doing shorties, and keeping a stock style y pipe, I don't think its legal for him to add cats. Plus it will be a PITA to do it also.
This is of course unless he has the G92 option with dual cats, which I don't think were available on 350's until '89, and standard in '91.
If going long tubes and getting a private inspection, definetly go with dual cats.

what Tim said. As far as installation tips...I think anything aside from hooker super comp long tubes won't be hard at all. When I had my flowtech shorties I was able to drop them in from the top pretty easily, just have to play around with how you twist and angle them to get on, not sure how much longer mid lengths go. Also, do yourself a favor and pick up a good set of header gaskets so you don't have to screw around with leaks later on. Percy's dead soft aluminum seem to be the way to go.

according to jordan your headers are longtubes
and the reason i vote for 2 cats is because it seems like running 1 at the merge of the Y would position it so far back that it may not heat up enough to function properly. when i got inspected they never even popped the hood let alone look under the vehicle for cats, so i'd be more worried about failing smog than the visual. if a shop is strict enough to fail you for adding a cat, they're going to fail you for repositioning the 1 anyway. no way you can keep it in the same place with longtubes.
not to mention the benefits flow-wise.

i would go with the magnaflow high flow cats they are amazing. As for installing headers there pretty simple. I no on my heddman longtubes the driver side is easier to put in through the bottom of the car and the passenger side thru the top. Any good exhaust shop can easily make a y pipe for the car tho. I paid 500 for three inch ID all the way back from the headers.

is it just the hooker headers that are extremely involved to install? that write-up i read sounded pretty insane

I believe so. I had to take the starter off, take out the bolts for the motor mounts and lift the engine. In addition to making sure the car was up high enough so the headers could be twisted and angled all sorts of directions to get in. I had to grind a little on the control arm for clearance but that was fine after I put new motor mounts in. Also had to reroute some brake lines around the k-member but that wasn't a big deal. JM was laying underneath the car with me helping me get them in
