China buys Volvo

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100328/...rd_geely_volvo

Wonder how this will (negatively) affect Volvo's safety and reliability record.

I was just reading that, interesting. I wasn't a huge Volvo fan before(even though they make some damn safe cars), I certainly won't be a fan now. They WILL get cheaper(quality wise) and less safe.

Lead is quite safe guys, now they can add the benefit of being safe from fallout to Volvo's lineup.

What I want to know is if Ford sold China all of Volvo's holdings too, as I read Volvo owns Mack trucks.

Volvo automotive has been owned by Ford since '99.

I think you all are taking ti the wrong way. They aren't going to be moving the plants, the owners manuals will not be in mandarin. let's take a look at Tata, and what they've done with jaguar. When ford owned them, there one chassis was built on the taurus platform, and Aston martin was owned by Ford as well, and they were both blandish car companies so one wouldn't be better then the other. Tata bought them, and they are doing fantastic. Their looks, their technology, handling, everything, they are just amazing hwo they were turned around. When was the last time you trusted a car from India?

China does have safety issues concerning their cars, and I'm willing to bet they are goign to be using Volvo's technology to greatly improve upon it, and try to begin to sell massivly and globaly. Volvo will remain in Sweden, I doubt they will cut back on their safety, and China will get the necessary safety technology they need. If Volvo does own Mack, I can see them improving their commercial trucks over there as well.

Are you a Volvo mechanic? My mom's a Volvo fanatic and she noticed the same thing, as the S80's got more and more Ford parts, they started to all break

It wasnt the Taurus...it was the Mondeo.
I wouldnt call anything from Aston "blandish"

And Tata has NOTHING to do with the current XF or XJ outside of keeping the funding going to make it happen. The XF/XJ were designed by Ed Callum, same guy who designed the boring Astons above.

Sweeds kept the lesser known Saab, and sold Volvo to the Chinese!!
Classic.

I'd rather a bland aston than a tasty firebird.

I'm by no means a Jag fan but the new XF gives me a stiffie...gorgeous car!

XF is very hot. I still cant get 100% used to the tail lights, but the rest of the car is just sexy.
XJ carries a little bit of that in a more upscale look, as it should be, but the XF looks more muscular. XF should do better, and the XFR is a killer.

If I ever hit the lottery I'd rock a XFR as a daily driver in a heart beat.
