rear harch won't release

My 97 T/A rear hatch is not releasing. If I click the hatch release inside or if i hit the button on the remote for the hatch it won't open. I hear the relay clicking up front but they release is not working. Anyone have something similar to this happen? The hatch opens with the key perfectly.

If you stand behind it, use the remote, and quickly lift it, does it open?

Can you hear the release "popping" in the back when you release it? Its a pretty distinct noise and I hear that over the relay clicking.

Check for power to the release when operating the release.
