I don't think they would lose alot, they are dumping LS2's in everything now. Probably cost them more to make a mid-level engine. Plus you can bet there will be a 425HP (at least) SRT8 Challenger for about $30K. I think they are going to need at least a 400HP car to compete, especially with (the much pricier) Shelby on the way. if they can get about 400-450HP and keep it around $25-27K they will put a hurting on Shelby sales. In fact if it were me I would have these 4 trim levels
Camaro -240HP V6 less then $15-$20K
Z-28-400HP LS2, available with low options for less then $25K
SS- 400HP LS2, load er up with options for $30K
ZL1 - 500+HP LS7, NO OPTIONS STANDARD $35-40K
I think it could be done within those price parameters with mostly off the shelf powertrain parts. If they want to hurt the Mustang they are gonna have to compete price wise. I think one thing that severly hurt the 4th Gen was even though it had alot more performance a Mustang GT could be had for $19,000 and a Z28 cost $25,000.

There is a problem, and that 400hp is too much hp for 25k. 400hp just has a higher price tag. The cheapest 400hp car is the GTO at 34k. Next is the SRT8 Tripplets at 40, and the C6 at 43k.
You could have gotten a 305hp Z28 in 2002 for 25k if you orderd it, but no really did.
There needs to be a mid level V8. People want the power of a V8, but not super car power. People at 25k dont NEED 400hp. A 300-330hp 5.3 would do more then fine. How many 305 TBIs sold to 305/350TPIs? How many V8 RS's sold in comparision to Z28?
How many 307 and 327's are there to 350's and 396's?
A RS or SS priced at 25-28k, with plenty of options and 330hp,will sell like hot cakes to thoes who want a fast car(as fast as the last generation Fcar). It will match or beat the Mustang GT's price and performance, and fight for that mid level buyer.
Entusiasts will always buy the big V8. If anything the 4th gens showed us, is that entusisasts are always there to buy the V8. While the 4th gen's sales decresed, the number of SS and TA sales stayed the same.
There needs to be a mid level option, something that offers power and economy. A 5.3 with variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, combined with a 6spd auto, would give great performance to thoes who want it, and give great driveablity and fuel economy when they dont. Its a win win situation. Hell, Id like to see a Two-Mode byrbrid Camaro, something the tree-huggers cant even get mad about.
There is a lot of potential with this car to make it mroe then it has to be.
And another thing, the "stripper" idea no longer exists unless its engineerd into the car. There are things that are expected in a new car today, and things like that are CD radio, power windows, power door locks, power steering, and at least a power driver seat. Stripping a car out would INCREASE cost of the car by having engineers design heavier components to replace the electric motors and relays. This is not 1966, the day of the stripper has gone and left us. The ZL1 would be the biggest flop on the market, like it was in 1969.

I'd like to see a commercial of a bunch of guys standing around at a Mustang round up, next to their 2005 Mustangs. While chatting among themselves in a parking lot, a 2009 Camaro rumbles past on the road.
The guys watch it go by in awe, look back to their 5 year old Mustangs, then look at each other.
"About time it came back."
Then they all drive to a Chevy dealership to trade in the Mustangs.

how can you flop at something you only half-assedly attempt? they were emulating the yenkos and bergers and motions of the day, took a shot at an all aluminum, race ready car but only built how many? 69. that's not a flop. they didn't even try.
if they put their minds to it and put a ZL1 together with the 1LE package, and sell a true road race ready vehicle - that is the car enthusiasts would buy, provided that they knew about them. not a lot of people knew about the ZL1 back in '69 and those that did find out usually found out after the fact, like the COPO scheme. (afaik there are still some ZL1 re-casts left over. like one or two, maybe? they wouldn't need that many, anyway) the perceived value of those type of cars would have guys digging deep into their pockets.
if they don't advertise something, how're people supposed to know they have it available?

in 1969 the ZL1 engine was not listed in any GM promotional, advertising, or sales training material. it was introduced for the singular reason of having the option available to make it legal for NHRA stock class racing. which at the time was the biggest "win on sunday, sell on monday" thing going for the big 3.
same thing for the JL8 disc brakes, it is a sure shot that more people woudl have been interested if they had known about the option. JL8 only came into existance so that the SCCA would approve 4wheel power disc brakes on the camaro in trans am competition.
GM will make every available option very visible to the public as they have done for all their cars in the last 20 years. what ever performance GM chooses to allow in the car will sell, the camaro has the market presence in name alone to carry the sales of specialty options.

i definitely love all the look who's back in town adds...they would be perfect.
Quick idea.
Show a traffic jam of sport cars, new mustang, charger, m3, new ricer crap. Then have them all start parting like the red sea with the 09 camaro drivin down the center going slow and sounding mean, with or with out the previous generations following. Fade to black with the a bow tie and "the king is back"

I hope that some of you die-hards realize that that a lot of modern casr come with a lot more standard features then cars you have purchased in the past. Things like power windows, door locks, radio, ac, are expected on a modern vehicle.
And I had to read over what Batman said. 15k for a Camaro? You cant get a Cobalt

power locks are easy to add, just run a few wires, get the switches and lock solenoids and TADA, power locks, of course this is coming from me where i have pulled apart over 30 f bodies.

That's a good point. Did you know that in the late 60s you could order a Corvette not just without a/c, but also without a heater? With the exception of cars like the Z06, Viper, Ford GT, car companies today don't really make "out the box race cars" like they did back then (particularly low budget ones). And even those three cars have a lot of the creature comforts you'd expect in a modern car. A new stock Camaro is going to be faster than a classic stock Camaro no matter what. And you have to remember you're talking net vs. gross hp as well.

i woudl consider a Z06 far from an "out of the box" racer. dual zone climate control, power leather seats, power locks.....
the only power item that GM is dropping in the new cars that makes any sense is the windows. power window motors have come so far they actually weigh less than a manual set up.

I know of several reviews and races that say otherwise about the Z06's race wortyness. .
Z06 is deffinatly a race car. What it has inside it only adds icing to the cake. There is enough CF to outweight the climate control. 505hp, aluminum frame, carbon fiber body pannels, massive brakes, super tight suspension, AND I can lap a Viper at a cool, exact 72*, my seat perfectly set to the position of the wheel and stick, and if I wanted, DVD based directions from my on board nav.
And all this for 70k. Life is grand.

You can not only lap a Viper, it's lighter and faster than the Ferrari F430.
The Speed Channel did a Test Drive on the Z06, and they went to the Bowling Green plant were all the Corvettes an Z06s are built. They showed in pretty good detail the Z06 being put together. From what I saw, it's built to race. The way they build the frame alone is unreal. The weight ratio of the car is near perfect. The fact that with all the emission and climate controls, power accessories, etc. they can still make 505hp..If you told that to anyone back in the mid 70s, hell even 10 years ago, they'd think you're crazy.

i think the Z06 IS the car to beat this year. supercar performance for $70,000
only thing that worries me is the brake problem that some people are having with them.
seems one good day at the track will eat up the stock pads, and replacements are hard to come by.

Really? What is the brake problem?
Im gunna jump the gun, and assume it has something to do with the 6 individual brake pads and the 6 pistion calipers. Sorry to hear that....I guess its time for carbon ceramic brakes
Only a 4k option!!! Dont you want to spend 2k on a brake job?

check on CZ28 in the auto news section. Chris started a thread on it yesterday. i heard about it late last year. guys running up at Watkins Glen were frying the stock pads and couldn't get replacements.

That's a bummer, considering the brake setup is very sophisticated.
