ok set up the xp machine for internet connection sharing, this will have the xp computer automatically set an ip address to the windows 98 computer. once the xp machine is set up, plug in the network cables to the switch and reboot the 98 machine, when it starts goto run
and type cmd. in the box that pops up type ipconfig /release, when that finishes type ipconfig /renew.

hey paul that hdd you just put in might not be formatted, if you have XP on that computer right click on the start button then click properties, then customize
if your using the newer version of the start menu (the top bullet) go to the advanced tab and all the way at the bottom select select the bullet next to "display on the all programs menu" under admin tools
if your using the older start menu (the bottom bullet) put a check next to "display admin tools"
after thats done go to start -> programs -> admin tools and select computer management. under the storage tree click Disk management and see if the other harddrive shows up in there, you should see two separate disks with either fat32 or NTFS partitions, if not format the one with fat32 that doesnt show up.
time for me to get some sleep since i have to be up at 5 am, talk to you guys later, ill definately have a lot of pics to share for those that wanna see them damn i need to get me one of these new fangled digital cameras (im using my moms for the time being)

but Brando, if he formats the drive he's trying to read from, it'll wipe out all the files on it.

No, what Brando is saying is the same thing I was thinking as soon as he said the new hdd didn't show in My Computer. The other drive that he just installed isn't formatted, so Windows won't recognize it.
You can't format the drive from within Windows 98, you need a boot disk that has the FDisk program on it.
You know what would make this really easy?
Take the one hard drive that has all of your old pictures on it out of the old computer temporarily. Rejumper it to slave, and install it in the newer computer. Copy pictures from the old hard drive to the hard drive that is in your new computer. Then shut down, reinstall old hard drive into old computer, and you'll be all set.

ok.. lemme explain, lol, i had 3 computers, a HP, a dell and an emachince.
The emachine is my current good one, the dell has the picture files, the HP is just another one i stripped apart yesterday. Before trying to put anything into my eMachine, i wanted to see how the process would work, so i put the HP hard drive in the Dell. Thats where i having issues. Once i see all how that works, then i was going to put the HD from the dell into the emachince and copy my files off it, then return the HD to the dell. But right now, i'm having trouble finding the HP HD on the dell. but thats not a big deal, but i was just trying to practice with doign that swap first.

I think you'll be fine swapping the Dell hdd into the eMachine. XP is far more advanced than 98, it should have no problem detecting the drive as long as your jumper settings are correct.
