I would have said Miata or RX-7 originally but those aren't Pontiac.

Did Pontiac ever make a Corvette competitor or was that not allowed by GM?

So did we. Ours was a 84 with the STE package. My mother swears it was the best car she ever owned.

Not a direct competitor but in the mid to late 70s the Firebird with the 400 and the 403 Olds kicked the vettes ass all over the streets!

I'm sure the 455 Super Duty in the early/mid 70s kicked its ass too.

Its really a shame that these cars will never see the road again as newer models, Although if GM stepped onto dodges trail with these, they would probably screw it all up.

Cars like late 70's Trans Ams?
Never see the road again?
Stepped on Dodge's trail?
Is this 1983? I'm confused.

Yes like the olds 442 and the 70's firebird, like its a shame that they will not be remade (ex. 2010 camaro, 2010 challenger) but im saying what dodge has come out with recently (ex. Charger and Dart) is just terrible.

70's Firebird? Can we please stop treating this car as if it was some sort of American Ferrari? Just because it had a big cubic inch engine doesn't change the fact that it was a 2 ton car with a 210hp V8.
What's wrong with the Charger? Dart is a toss-up (the new one is a very good car), but the revised Charger is head and shoulders better looking that the last one.
There is no better time to be into cars than right now.

While the rear 3/4 of the charger is nice, I cannot stand that nose. The protruding grill ruins it for me.
Also: While I owned several 2nd gens (all Camaros) I never understood the overwhelming praise. They were heavy, and the stock motor offerings all sucked.

During the the 70's the Firebird was our American Ferrari! What were your other options? The Camaro? The Corvette? LOL! Not if you wanted to go fast! It was a sad time for american cars when the fatest production vehicle in 79 was a pickup truck! I do agree, it's a great time to be in cars but you also have to give credit where due even during a dark time for cars.

Nobody will argue that the 70s cars did virtually nothing well performance wise off of the showroom floor.
But they were what the public wanted. Firebird aside, just in 1979 GM sold more Camaros than GM has sold 5th gens since they hit dealerships- by 50k units. In '78 it was 40k units, and in '77 it was just about the same. 3/4 million Camaros in 3 years. The performance was horrible, the camshafts were pencils, compression ratios were awful, but the buyers were still there for some reason. It is nice to see the 5th gen building some steam as it's a fantastic car. They just need to get it in the hands of the right people.
Performance wise nobody will argue that now is the best time. That's obvious in the huge trend of people doing engine swaps to modern stuff. Same with transmissions.
And FWIW, 1979 Ferraris were **** too. They looked nice but were a far cry from what we have now.

I always racked it up to heavy use of drugs finally taking a toll on the population by the late 70s.

That and Burt Reynolds. And CB radios.
Seriously though, I think the overwhelming ****tiness of the Mustang had a lot to do with it.

Saw the car in question yesterday. I told him he had everyone waiting to hear what it was.
Not that this will help, but it has side pipes...
