Air condiitiong

Bought a 1983 z28 that had been trashed over time. Wiring harness cut up bad and air condition system has accumulator and evaporator only. Would like to get this up and running as last year the car was impossible to drive in summer due to heat. Need parts and help also as I am not sure what all is needed in the way of missing pieces. Thanks

Best bet is to source the parts used. A4 compressor, condensor, hoses , ect, just get new.
You can change over to a newer sanden style compressor also. There are a few places that have used parts for third gens.

Was thinking about goiing that route but I don't have any mounting brackets for the compressor. Car was 305 5 speed. Seems like most options except t-tops. It currently has a 1990 corvette 350 with the 5 speed attached. Nice car just butchered. ECM is gone. Cruise control not working. Wipers connected to toggle switch and only one speed so I'm not sure how many pieces of the a/c are gone or if an a/c system would even operate without the ECM gone. Thank you for replying. Need all the help I can get with this one.

Assuming its a carb setup being the ECM is gone. AC is controled by the car, not the ECM. Only thing ECM did was activate fans and up the idle on the EFI cars. Carb cars have mech fans and an idle solenoid for the ac. Its not hard, you just need the right stuff. To start, I would identify the extent of what you have. The wiring and controls would be where I would start.

Your best bet is contact a third gen dismantler. There are a few on FB. The fellow below has stuff and there is a fellow in PA that has stuff that I can't seem to find his contact at the moment.

I did purchase a shop manual off eBay for the 83 camaro awhile back and I made a list, low side pressure cycling switch, compressor, orifice tube, condenser, evaporator, accumulator, and heater core, but not being totally versed on air conditioning systems altogether I have a funny feeling after reading different articles that I may have overlooked a piece here or there that belongs to the a/c system. I sure appreciate your input and will look into these books. I checked out your suggestion last night and it led me to eBay. I think he has the brackets I need although when I entered 83 z28 for fitment it came back not compatible. He has them listed for a v-8 84 Berlinetta. Waiting to here from him as I sent him an email last night.

Confirm the 3rd gen brackets (83 z28) will fit your current front pulley setup and 1990 vette motor/heads. If you have a serp belt now, the v belt setup the car originally had will not work. You may need 87-92 brackets/parts.

Post a picture of under your hood and front of engine and I'll let you know what you may need.

This is basically the setup that you need, in regards to the brackets at least.

I may have a bunch of the parts, but i'm truly not 100% sure. I recently bought a house and moved so my time has been spent away from where I keep all my parts.

Where are you located?

edit: Also looks like you'd need the correct water pump pulley as well. I almost wanna say I have a complete pulley setup, Id just have to dig through bins and boxes.

If you plan on keeping the car, get these parst new:
low side pressure cycling switch, compressor, orifice tube, condenser, evaporator, accumulator, and heater core,

They aren't too expensive vs the cost of dealing with unknown used ones unless you find a known working system. The wiring, bracketry , ect are teh pieces you will need to source.

I'm right outside of Philadelphia. Gloucester City N.J. to be exact. I can wait to see if you have what this car needs. No real hurry on my part. Also wouldn't doubt the water pump pulley is incorrect. To many people under the hood over the years and it looks like they threw in there anything and everything that would make it run. I enjoy a challenge and don't mind getting greasey, plus my oldest grandson will be driving in a couple of years and he is drooling at the fact of owning it down the road. I obtained some parts last year in a deal that would make it look like a non a/c car under the hood but after the heat last summer I realized that wasn't an option. Thanks V. I appreciate the help. Here is a picture of the old girl attached.
