What heads would be better for a 305

113 casting aluminum vette heads with mild bowl blend
Or
machined to fit vortec heads?

well the vortecs dont need to be machined to fit... but it depends on what your going for with your induction, carb or tbi go vortec, but if your going tpi go 113 heads... i mean if your on a budget... the vortec heads are better heads though

Why are you not fond of the TC lockup? Saves gas, and reduces wear on your trans by lowering temperatures....

Umm. What's to scare you?

You don't even have to worry about it unless you decide to go to a normal carb and ditch the factory ECM alltogether. Then you just grab the B&M kit and you're all set.

Scared does not equal bad; scared = learning opportunity.

It is not the parts fault you are scared.

What are your other options:
1) TH350 auto
2) TH350 auto with a Gear Vendors Unit
3) A T5
4) A TKO trans
5) A T56
6) A Lenco

Nothing cheap (except #1, but that is too old school, even for me). Fix the TCC. You can do it!!!

mw66nova is a real cool guy and is helping me out for high 13's heres the pm I sent him and he sent me back..

Quote:
well, the link was for low 13's. mid 12's is a whole 'nother ball game. i can get you into the high 13's on a budget, but after that, you better be ready to spend some serious cash to get to where i'm at. i have ~$4K in the engine with all the parts and labor in JUST the engine and exhaust. now i didn't pay that much cause i did all the labor and fabwork myself, but that's how much it would cost to duplicate the combo now. i have another ~$3K in the tranny/converter and rearend. again, that's parts and labor, and i didn't pay that much again cause i did all the labor myself...but setting up rearends and stuff is not something one can tackle without all the correct instrumentation. not wanting to scare you off, but just a reality check, you know? my car is a purpose built drag car that is on the edge of streetable. regardless, there is a parts list on my cardomain site. the link for that list is in my sig.

now, if your wanting to run high 13's, i can get you there pretty easily. a mild cam, ~2200stall converter and 3.73's will get you there, make sure you use the 416 heads from your lg4 though cause they are alot better than the lo3 heads...while the car is all apart, have those heads ported/polished and put in a 1.94 intake valve. look for a cam with ~214*/224* duration @ .050, run a holley 600 double pumper with a holley street dominator intake (p/n 300-36) and a set of 3.73's and you'll have enough power to anywhere you'd like and it'd run 13.7's for sure.
So now Im thinking of not using my heads cause they suck.. and I would want bigger gears..

other then that what do you guys think? plus I still got a 100 shot

um i think that gearing depends on what suits your motor... you would want to be making power all the way through trap... so in terms of gears you have to see what gears satisfy your power curve... and your heads for sure could get better man... get some vortecs and if you want to go balls out then get some better heads than that

what do you mean tbi persay, either ya got tbi or ya got a carb. and yeah you can definitely use an lt1 cam, but its going to be difficult to dip below low 14s/ high 13s with that cam in a 305

My friend is running mid 11's on Vortec heads...some minor port work, some bowl work.

Also, there is no need to be afraid of converter lockup, unless you're afraid of saving some gas lol

figure out teh whole combination before you start buying parts. once you develop a combo that will all work together and you know everything is available, that is the time to parts shop.
does the 91 motor you have include teh roller lifter set up? that coudl make a huge difference in what cam + head combo you will want to look at.

i always thought the tc lock up was just a mechanical clutch inside the tc that kicked in at 50 mph...

The lockup varies based on your speed and throttle position, but yea. It's controlled by the computer from the factory though, so if you remove the computer you have to have another controller for it.
