trans code

i picked up a 98 camaro with a 3.8 auto with 141xxx, i get a ses light p0753, i was reading up that's its the 1-2 shift solenoid, but i have no idea where it is, the Internet is giving me 900 different cars and places on where it might be, i'm just having a hard time find out how to fix it, any help would be awesome.

thanks

I don't know the inner workings of the electronic automatics too well, but this will likely help:

I had to change the harness in the4l60e in my k1500 and the solenoids were part of the harness. so it is not that hard.

that said, a code does not always mean "replace that part". which is why aamco told that guy 'we have to look first' because customers don't like wrong guesses.

find someone with a manual and find out the diagnostics tests. adam might have them available as a quick copy&paste.

i repaced the shift solenoid, fresh fluid and filter, cleared the code and as soon as i got on the road it came on rite away and still starting off in second, i dont maybe it could be a pcm issue or what, any advice if possable.

It doesn't have that funky 2nd gear start thing enabled, does it? I dunno if that was still around in 98.

find someone with a manual and find out the diagnostics tests. adam might have them available as a quick copy&paste. guessing gets expensive and annoying real fast.

actually, I have 1999 books some where unless I lent them out. i'll see if I can find that info for you.

Annoyingly, alldata uses pictures for the diagnostic table that are on a server you need a password for. So for me to get you those, I'll have to screen capture each one, rehost, etc. If you need them, I can do it. For now, this might be of help.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The 1-2 Shift Solenoid Valve (1-2 SS Valve) controls the fluid flow acting on the 1-2 and 3-4 shift valves. The 1-2 SS Valve is a normally-open exhaust valve that is used with the 2-3 Shift Solenoid Valve in order to allow four different shifting combinations. The solenoid attaches to the control valve body within the transmission. The 1-2 SS Valve receives ignition voltage through circuit 239. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the solenoid by providing the ground path on circuit 1222.

When the PCM detects a continuous open or short to ground in the 1-2 SS Valve circuit or the 1-2 SS Valve, then DTC P0753 sets. DTC P0753 is a type A DTC.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC

The system voltage is 8-16 volts.
The engine speed is greater than 450 RPM for 5 seconds.
Not in fuel cutoff.
All of the above conditions are met for 5 seconds and either of the following fail conditions occurs for 5 seconds:
The PCM commands the solenoid ON and the voltage input remains high (B+).
The PCM commands the solenoid OFF and the voltage input remains low (0 volts).

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS

The PCM illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
The PCM commands D2 line pressure.
The PCM inhibits 3-2 downshifts if the vehicle speed is greater than 48 km/h (30 mph).
The PCM freezes shifts adapts from being updated.
DTC P0753 stores in PCM history.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE MIL/DTC

The PCM turns OFF the MIL after three consecutive trips without a failure reported.
A scan tool can clear the DTC from the PCM history. The PCM clears the DTC from the PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a failure reported.
The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the ignition is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS

Inspect the wiring at the PCM, the transmission connector and all other circuit connecting points for the following conditions:
A bent terminal.
A backed out terminal.
A damaged terminal.
Poor terminal tension.
A chafed wire.
A broken wire inside the insulation.
Moisture intrusion.
Corrosion.
When diagnosing for an intermittent short or open condition, massage the wiring harness while watching the test equipment for a change.
An open ignition feed circuit can cause multiple DTCs to set.

I can't find the right book. It's in #3 and I can only find 1+2. Damn it.

Adam can you right click on the pics and save? Or a screen print app like snag it?

hold off on buying a used ecm until you do proper testing.

Nah you have to screen capture it. I usually use snip it.

(note, missed bottom pf page 7-168. yes - go to step 14; no - go to step 15

not much there. fairly simple circuit. check fuse; look for opens/shorts; check SS resistance. looks like you need a tech tool to force the pcm to ground the circuit
