Binding brakes?

since TGO is failing me, figured id throw it out here. It seems that my brake system is binding or something, i have only about 1" of total pedal travel before it (the pedal) just stops dead, you can stand on the pedal and no more. The car stops fine, but if you panic stop you cant lock or come close to locking the wheels. The pedal is not binding on anything that i can see and most everything else is new/newer. Its the stock 3rd gen booster, ls1 master, c5 fronts and 4th gen Camaro rear discs with a disc/disc prop valve.

Also, if i unbolt the master and press the brake pedal, will it hurt anything? seals ect? Im a little confused here

This all worked at one time? Nothing new has been introduced?

Unbolting the MC from the booster & then stepping on the brake should not hurt anything, although I question what it will show you.

Im not sure if its always been there since i rebuilt the car last? I didnt drive it very hard because of the break-in process and just recently noticed the brake issue. I assume its always been there?

I just wanted to know about the booster so i could disconnect it and see if the issue is before or after the booster. Like is something wrong with the booster or is there an issue with the master.

Try it.

It is the original/correct brake pedal & booster to the car?

the pedals are correct, the booster is original

i pulled the master off the booster and the pedal works properly, bolt it back on and the same binding.

IT would seem that i have a problem with the master? not sure what would cause it to bind up like this?

maybe because its an ls1 master and 3rd gen booster? something between the two not working correctly or allowing for proper travel? just a thought

Maybe something to do with the booster pushrod and the master cylinder piston?

yeah thats what i was thinking. 3rd gen not compatible with ls1. maybe you need a new booster and possibly pedal setup

its a common mod, almost completely bolt on, the only reason you dont use the 4th gen booster is its formed a little different and it wont clear something, or so im told.

its the ls1 master and pushrod, like i said i have brakes, so the piston is moving, but only a little before something binds.
i noticed that the bracket for the propvalve was hitting the booster can, maybe causing a misalignment or something, so i packed it off a little and still nothing

i really dont want to do it, but i may pull the master completely out of the car and see if i can move the piston manually on the bench, and if i do that im probably going to ditch the prop valve and use an adjustable one for just the rear.

Well another wonderful day with little progress. I pulled the master and prop valve off the car, everything works great on the bench, not bind nothing, nice and smooth. With it bolted back in the car and the lines to the individual wheels still disconnected it works fine, moves fluid, no bind. Hook the brake lines up to it, binding?

I had the propvalve all torn apart looking for debris or something, no problems there.

after bench bleeding and re-installing the master and propvalve, i bled the rear brakes, the pedal sill binding in the same spot, plenty of fluid moving though.

When i bled the fronts, the pedal would go full motion as long as the bleeder was open. Finished up with the fronts and now the pedal seems to move properly, but will not go to the floor, not sure if its supposed to.

I pulled the car out of the garage and i have a lot more pedal travel, but no pedal feel, guess i need to bleed more, but i might be getting somewhere. Its break time, so i'll see where i get later.

if you are bleeding the breaks, the pedal should go to the floor. maybe do the rears again then the fronts and see where you are at. maybe explain it again cuz im kinda dumb right now

i bled them again, gravity for a while and pumping a bit. So as of now im right back where i started. the brakes work, but only 1" of pedal travel.

and now the brainfart.... How much vacuum do you need at idle for power brakes to work? i just checked it and im only making 10lbs, doesnt seem like much.

Seams like you ruled everything else out. Do you have a hand vacuum pump to pump up the booster to see if that makes a difference.

So I guess you got it then. If it pops up again and you want to try a different booster let me know. I have one out of an '86 bird that I found while looking through all of my parts this weekend.
