November 15th is the cutoff date for my cars inhabitance on the road (I should learn from experience by driving it into the back of a Plymouth during a snowstorm at 15MPH). Yea Im always in that area... because Im a garbage man for Roxbury (Hey its big bucks though for a 19 year old) and live right off of RT46 before Mine Hill... just had my car tuned up for the first time at West 10 Xpress Lube on Rt 10 in Ledgewood since I owned it and by the looks when I purchased it a year ago, its never been maintenenced by the previous owner because 2 out of the 8 spark plugs were in seriously bad condition. But yea I drive around the McDonalds a few times on Friday nights LOL . Maybe Ill see ya when Im passing through Hackettstown tomorrow morning to get to Washington for my CD-L testing (Cant stand Wayne DMV lines that wrap around the outside of the building). Look for the 5-Toned-Black Third Gen

Heres my ride (No laughing)
I got roughly $8000 to spend on it right now (If I wanted to start working on it today) and I'll be gettin more money over the course of winter from plowing streets during snowstorms at 2 in the morn. I figure start from the interior (gotta fix the TTop leak first), then do the engine/tranny/rear work... by springtime, Ill work on the exterior and it should be set.

I took this last spring. Looks like sheeit.

This was probably two months ago when I backed up into a tree... in my backyard... *sigh* I was fixing the bumper here. Turned out good

A pic from the side when I was fixing my bumper. Its dirty... thats what you get from a non-paved-rock-driveway.

Sine my accident last winter, the hood was wrecked. So I ordered new parts from one of those online companies (the companies with like 11 words in the site-address)... apparently, they messed up on the order and never ORDERED the hood for me... everything else came but the hood, so I got refunded my money for it and got it for free. Came with a small dent and the vent fittings were unproperly "cut". I cant fit the friggin things in there.

there is a fugged up LT1 in paramus pontiac I believe a 94 with 4k worth of body damage, theres you entire drive train, or if you want repair it. it looked like only the hood and right flip light needed to be replace other stuff could be sanded and painted.

they were asking 5k but you can DEFENITLY talk them down. or I could even get you a TPI with trans it is a 350 out of a tpi I think the kid wants 400-500 for it.

Yea it would be used just strictly for the drivetrain. I like 4th gens, but Im really into 3rd gens. I mustve tore my car down (except the drivetrain) three times inside and out.

But yea, lemme know about that 350 like the mileage n sheeit. Ill keep it in mind. Thanks

Im keeping my eye open for a RamAir hood or a 4" cowl. Though Im not doing anything exterior till I put in a 383/TH350 and interior (dont need to dingie up new exterior parts). Thanks for the offer. Although I have an 85' firebird hood also with the 2-vent setup, just needs to be redone due to dings and paint-chippage.

Yo - big Daddy...don't do the TH350. Go for the TH700 from TCI. A friend of mine did that conversion on his 83 Z after hew blew the trans the third time. He was sorry cause your top speed sucks big ass and any fuel economy is out the window for highway crusin. Don't make the same mistake. Get a good TH700 and you'll be much better off.

Love the third gens as well. I miss my 87 TA - 305 TPI, 5speed, t-tops, digital dash, ect etc.

I dropped a crate 350 from GM (350/350 w/ alum heads) into my 86 Z with a borg warner t-56 and 3.73s. Car had bawlz and almost 30mpg. Thats a thought as well instead of the A4 if you're willing to spend the 3k on the trans and coponents. Don't forget subframe connectors after the engine goes in or those t-tops will leak a lot worse than they do now. And make sure you order the t-top moulding for an 87 or newer 3rd gen. The design is different for the water channels at the t-tops and does a better job of guiding the water away from the window instead of inside the car. And they will fit the 86 no prob. Welcome and good luck.

if you're gonna go for the 700 i would say anywhere from 3.73s to 4.10s(overdrive is awesome)

i've also heard of 3.90 gears...anyone know if they're sold for a 4th gen carrier?

Don't pick your gears until you have the motor built, and you know what the powerband looks like. The 700-R4 is a good tranny, that has gotten a bad rap with some people because the early-mid 80s 700s were weak. If you don't buy a 'race built' trans, look for a low-milage 700 from '87 and newer cars. There were many changes to them that made the '87-'93 700s stronger than the earlier ones.

Get a good converter (again, matched to your combination), and install a shift kit, and you should be ready for lots of happy use from your 700-R4.

Pre 87' Is the non-lock up version. Lock up is your best bet. DONT do the TH350 conversion, I did it and regretted every day of it.

Not true.....the original 700R4 in my '85 had a lockup converter
