passing NJ inspection

I went to a private inspection station today and I failed for emissions and I don't know what else to do. My cars a 94 Trans Am GT, with a .570/.550 cam, 30lb SVO injectors, ported heads and intake,1.6rr, 52 mm BBK TB, LT's, magnaflow cat, magnaflow muffler, and a custom tune from PCMforLess. I'm not sure what else I can do to try and pass. I have heard of something you pour into your tank that greatly reduces your emissions but I'm not sure what it is.

The cam came with the car, I'd really hate to get rid of it, its make the car sound amazing, the motor has great power, and believe it or not my gas mileage isn't really that bad if I don't constantly hammer the pedal.

Whats the LSA on the cam? And where is the cat located? For LTs you really want two cats, one per header, and each in the Y pipe.

What did you fail for - what are the numbers? Something as simple as a bad EGR can fail you.

Yea but your stock internals, I could run as many cats as I could, and still wouldn't pass.

im sure its possible. swapping for a mild cam and having the appropriate tune. all emissions related equipment hooked up and working properly. its just annoying how many people **** bricks about passing or where to go when most all chose to do these things to their cars. whatever over it

post up the numbers. i'd be interested to see how you did especially with a cam like that and 1.6 rockers. my inspection is due in march and i just completed a motor swap with a fairly mild cam 208/221 .474/.510. maybe i should hang on to my stock cam just in case.

Just find a shady shop to pass it, why change a cam twice? Sound and performance over the enviornment.

Sounds like the ZZ4 cam. Back in the late '90s, GM got the ZZ4 emissions-certified as a legal crate motor swap with no EGR, and a stock CCC carb in California. You should have NO problem passing inspection with that cam as long as you have a functional cat and a good tune. What are you using up top, carb or fuel injection?

yep its a zz4 cam. i do have a cat, and am using tbi to feed the motor. the tune is not all the way there yet, but i'm hoping to dial it in with the wide band. still got some time before i am due so i'll work on it until then. oh, does anyone know what the driving conditions of the test are? do they just take measurements at idle or do they put it on the dyno? that info would be a big help because then i could work on those specific rpm/map cells.

you will be on the dyno. test is at 15mph. your idle needs to be between like 400 and 1250 i think.

It was only made in 94' I believe. It's just a trans am but the GT's came with the high rise wing.

The standards are by model year, any car that was a TBI model year would have a pretty low, Pre OBD, standard compared to your '94.

Without an EGR, it will be tougher to pass. See if you can grab a junk yard set up and throw that back on or rig something up. you may also have to mess with the tune to get it through. The inspection station should have given you a print out of the emissions readings to take back to your personal mechanic to help him diagnose and remedy the issue. If they did not give you the print out, head back over and get it from them, it shoudl be saved in their inspection computer.
