I think the P0300 is the dreaded random multiple misfire codes that the 96 likes to display. The other codes look like AIR or EVAP codes. My old 96 SS would occasionally pop up the P0300 and I replaced a lot of little things but never did find the culprit. And it was never really misfiring when it would pop up, it was running smooth. I think the 96 cars have issues with the crank sensor since it was the first year for it with OBDII. I replaced the ICM, coil, wires, a bunch of EVAP parts and it went away for a long time but the guy who bought the car said it eventually came back. You could try shimming the coil with washers to get it away from the block and the heat soak. Maybe do the wires or at least the coil wire. Teh EVAP codes you need to look into and might need some new parts like the purge solenoid.

P0300 - random multiple cylinder misfire
P0171 - system too lean, bank 1
P0174 - system too lean, bank 2

Check for fuel issues, too. Fuel filter, low fuel pressure, bad regulator.

i told him to clean his MAF, a google search lead me to believe that the MAF may be dirty...plus he has an oiled air filter, and said he found oil in the intake elbow

Check for vacuum leaks. Thats usually the cause of DTC's P0171 & P0174. In some cases, if the car is too too lean it can cause a lean misfire. Also check your fuel pressure. A dieing fuel pump and cause the car to go lean due lack of fuel.

thanks for all the info guys, i'm going to start to try everything i can tomorrow because right now by me its been raining for awhile. I'll keep you updated with whats going on.

Update!

i cleaned the MAF sensor and i disconnected the battery and i just put everything back and reconnected the battery and the check engine light has turned off.

I tried to turn off the check engine light before by disconnecting the battery but it didnt work but now its off and it stays off

well the misfire monitor is the one of the first monitors to set. so since you addressed the problem then disconnected the battery, more or less you probably fixed it. you have to drive the car alot though to set all of the other monitors before you can get reinspected.

Check to make sure the intake elbow isn't leaking air after the MAF somewhere. The P0300 doesn't always come back right away but it can be stubborn. It really sounds like you might have some sort of vacuum leak.

Nah, there are opti death codes. Does it break up at all when driving? At idle? Higher RPM?

no it doesnt cut out at all. one thing thats weird, when i first got the car and my dad was driving it home the check engine light came on only when h shifted into 6th. the check engine light came on the other day because i had to go on the highway and a little after i shifted into 6th the light came on. also, when im driving the check engine light is constantly lit but if im on the highway in 6th gear ever once in awhile the light will flash for like 5 seconds.

Any ideas?

flashing SES is a sign of misfiring/detonation

Could be. Do you know somebody with AutoTap or some type of scanning software?

If you have headers and no cats in the y-pipe, have you had it tuned? It sounds like it's running really lean and it could be the catalytic overtemp protection trying to warn you or it could be a legit lean condition. Have someone scan it while you're driving to watch the fuel trims and O2's. I wouldn't assume the O2's are bad. Sounds like a really lean condition overall.

right now the exhaust system is stock with the exception of the borla cat-back. I wanted to wait till i passed inspection to do the headers and no cats.

I wonder if the AIR is kicking in and pumping too much air causing it to lean and detect that as possible damage to the cats. The EVAP setup has a lot of little pieces to it and if one of the sensors or check valves isn't working right it could let too much air in. The EVAP cannister on my old 96 SS the charcoal was disintegrating and there were bits and pieces being sucked up through the lines all the way to the intake. You could pull off the EVAP line and check it. I got a moth full of gas filled charcoal when I did the inhale test!
