Camaro Rear Bezel?

I have seen a few camaros, with the rear bezel painted black. I think Smoking SS has it on his Camaro.

Why was it done, and does it have any significance?

I just thought it was pretty cool, and seemed like an easy thing to do.

If I understand correctly, isn't it called the "Berger" Rear panel? As seen on the Berger SS Camaros. Just a thought.

yes its a berger camaro panel...you can make it yourself by just painting the rear panel black...but make it flat black cuz when its shiny it looks gay

I don't remember exactly which models, but I think it was a certain number of first gen Camaro SS's that had a flat back panel between the tail lights. I would guess that it is a throwback to that.

yes its considered the berger style now(also like my stripes), however back in the late 60 and early 70's some SS cars, like nova chevelle and camaro came with a flat black rear taillight filler panel. when berger did their cars they went back to that styling, sorta a nostalgic thing. and yes flat black(satin) is the only color to do it in where it doesnt look 100% wrong. I did it before my export taillights and the european bumper so when my bumper gets painted I may put my original pewter panel back on since the rear end may look too "cluttrered". but thats once i pull my back bumper off and send it for paint. i almost like my bumper flat black and its been on there liek that for a few months now since i'm lazy. lol. Also if you wanna paint the panel, go buy a used piece, dont paint your original just in case you ever want to go back.

Is the panel easy to remove? I want to do it, and will try and find a used piece to spray.

its pretty easy to pull. first you need to pull the hatch carpeting back and remove the taillights, 3 wingnuts for each side. then you will see i think 4 10mm nuts(the studs are on the panels and stick through. one nut will be on the outside edge of the panel(inside the trunk) and the other 2 are spaced about where the inner edge of the taillights are. it takes about 15 min to fuly remove and replace, check ebay for the panels, i got mine for $25. and 93-02 are all the same either v6 lt1 or ls1.
