96 Imp to OBD-I is awesome

So other than the tach registering double the actual RPM (pcm see's it fine) the car is awesome. Even got to tuning it in SD mode with the MAF in the trunk. We're doing a gas mileage test to prove that SD tuned properly is just as good as MAF only without the whole intake ducting issues. We even have proof that the rotation of the MAF can change things up. Before the tune it was constantly around 118 BLM. This means the MAF tables were reporting too much air flow than what was actually getting into the motor. With just rotating the MAF 90 degrees back to it's stock "clocking" the BLM's went to 124 and the "split" decreased from 6 down to 2. Scientifically I can explain it but it's easier to just point and say, DUH, MAF's aren't as great as people think they are. They can screw up just as easily and limit you just like how MAP limits you.
We'll have the conclusion about mileage and 1/4 mile performance between the 2. This is what happens when you get 2 engineers together to futs around with a high performance car... we prove things that don't matter to 99% of the world :P . I'm guessing the times will all be within a tenth of each other. Also, it's pure 87 octane.
With the OBD-I pcm it's a lot easier to tune and more "complete." We'll be adding a switch to enable and disable the built in shift kit from GM. I can even tune the performance shifting tables with line pressure vs gear and even the upshift and downshift speeds all vs TPS (obviously). It's a blast and makes me want to get a 4L60E

the only reason people dont do it is because as you do more and more mods the computer has less info to take in and comprehend...if you know you wont be doing anything to the car for a while a SD tune is the way to go...you should generally make more power and have just one less complication in there(maf). Personally I love speed density but you have to know what the persons plans are with the car to be able to determine if its a good or bad thing for them to get into.

He got into an accident that probably totalled the car . Only a week after we got done with the SD tuning. He got a best mpg, 21.8 average when in above his normal traffic. Nothing was changed except the SD tuning and the "shift kit" that I programmed in. We didn't get a chance to take it to the 1/4 mile but it felt the exact same.

see that damn SD killed his car...it was probably running 10's and the power was no longer controllable by your average driver...lets everyone switch over now

See why I'm so adverse to swapping out my MAF....that SD is a killer!

Sorry to hear about the car, whoever's it is.
