$500 too much for header install?
I called a reputable exhaust shop in my area to see about getting long tube headers and a y-pipe installed. Like the title says they quoted me $500. Does this sound about right to you guys or should I continue to look for a cheaper price. Of course cheaper is better but Ive never paid for this work before so Im not sure what "too much" is. Thanks in advance!

Well, headers on an LS1 are a bitch. If labor is say 90/hour = 5 1/2 hours... which is fair on an LS1 car
Just make sure they do motor mounts while in there.

doesn't sound too bad. motor mounts would be a great idea.

haha. it's really not that bad of an install at all. if you don't have the time though that's not too too bad of a price.
are you planning on running an ory or cats?

Not so much the time. I dont have a place or the tools to do it. I live in a apartment complex. Ive done headers before (never an f body) and swore I'd never do it again. I just dont have the patience to be completely honest.
and yea I'll be running cats. The price of them welding them into the y pipe is included in the 500 dollars.
Thanks for the reply's and advice. Im going to order poly motor mounts now actually.

I am pretty sure I have seen SSP and JSPerformance both post up better prices than that before. Call around and see what some other shops say.

If you don't have the tools or place to do them and most importantly the patience. Then $500 isn't to bad, But I know a reputable shop that does them for $400 and they have a dyno and can tune them which is a good idea as well. PM me if you want there info.
Me I have the tools, the place, and I'm just flat out cheap Ha, so I'll be doing them myself.

I say you post up and see if you can get a bunch of guys(and girls) to help out offer up beer & pizza. Headers on an ls1 car isnt that bad, never done a ypipe on that car tho.

I certainly won't quote prices for Josh but I'm sure he could do something for you.

Maybe he stepped away or left after the headers were installed. There are always reasons for things you know.

duals maybe? or he just got tired and gave up haha
but yeah the space thing is understandable. i helped the guy whom i purchased my headers from swap back to manifolds in his driveway in 30 degree weather and it wasn't very fun. in a garage it's not that bad at all though. i'm sure you could find a member on here semi-locally that'd help you out. that's what i did with my suspension since i didn't have $400 to spend to have someone else install it. if you have the money though i'd say it's not that bad of a deal.

LS1 emission's headers are definitely easier than LT1 emission's headers. With that being said, it all depends on how prepared you are for the swap and if you have all the little parts lined up and ready to go. Are you planning on keeping the full emission's on the car(AIR and EGR)? The 98-99 cars had a different AIR mounting(90 degrees rotated vs 00-02) and the 00 is a one year only combo with the correct AIR mounts and EGR because 01-02 don't have the EGR. Having a shop do the header install with everything hooked up and cats welded into the y-pipe I would expect $400-500 as the going rate. I would suggest doing the motor mounts like someone else mentioned. I should have done it and I still need to go back in at some point. The engine rotates pretty good with stock motor mounts and the driver's side header will most likely hit something when you accelerate.

yeah my y pipe bangs my floorboard pretty bad. at first i had some steel wool shoved between the y pipe and the frame which worked but it fell out.

Our normal price for header and y-pipe install is $420 plus gaskets and clamps (if needed) We can also replace the spark plugs and wires for you much cheaper while we are there than if we were to do them later. We stock NGK plugs and Belden lifetime wires, if you prefer another brand we can usually have them next day in most cases.
Thanks

$400-500 seems reasonable, you can view my writeup on installing LS1 headers here http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~kanwisch/...8Camaropg4.htm its not horribly difficult, just a bit time consuming especially without a lift.
