That was not a corvette. It was a 1954 Olds F-88 Concept car although it did look very much like a corvette.

Actually, I think there are 3 of them and that same museum that bought it for $3 million has all 3 now! Talk about cornering the market. I wonder what the only 1968 Z28 convertible would sell for? I heard the guy turned down $1 million for the car last year.

I remember reading something about a 67 Z28 vert. there was only one made. or maybe it was the one JL8Jeff was talking about. a rare car nonetheless. I saw a Super chevy or camaro performers mag that had a 69 Z with some sort of hemi heads on it. they said it was experimental and never made it to production. Now that would be sorth some serious cash!

Actually, it was a late 50's vintage Buick 'Concept Car' that brought that insane amount of money

They made one 1968 Z28 convertible and he's been offered over $1 million for it but didn't sell. Chevrolet made some sets of small block hemi heads in 69 to see if they would work better for the TransAm racing. In the end, a set of ported stock 186 heads made just as much power so they abandoned the hemi heads. I think there are 3-5 motors out there with these heads. But they don't seem to bring any big money like you might think. They are a pain in the butt to keep running and there are no replacement parts. Different cam, different intake, different headers, different distributor and firing order. Cool stuff though.

Do you happen to know off hand what the firing order was on those?

No, I'm not sure on the firing order. I'll ask somebody who had one of the engines in his 69 Z28.

They also had some 32v overhead cam engines back in the 60's that never made it into production. GM did a bunch of crazy stuff back in the day that you'd never have thought.
As for the 3mil for a gold car, hmm... I don't know what's dumber, building a gold car or the idiot that thought to buy it. Obviously the buyer because it did sell but WTF I mean really WTF. Cool none the less but what would be cooler, a gold car or a bad ass car that had 3 mil worth of performance mods that just so happened to look more exotic.

That gold concept car is going into a new auto museum in Col and it will probably be the centerpiece. Price didn't matter, they wanted that car no matter what it took. But at least it will on display for the public to see and not tucked away in a hyperbolic chamber.

Prevo the car wasn't actually made of gold, that's just the color it was painted. It's definately a cool looking car but I could never justify paying $3mil for it. The guy who bought it said they called the next day and changed the museum plans to have a special room built just for this car. Either way the auction as a whole was more inspiration for me to get my restoration business moving along quicker.

Forget the restoration business, the money is in the custom street rod business. There were a bunch of street rods selling for $100-500K. Resto-mods/pro-touring type cars are becoming the rage with a stock looking body but modern drivetrain and bigger/wider wheels. I sold my 68 Camaro 4 months too soon. I could probably get $20K for that car now that the smoke has cleared from the auction.

Yeah I'm going to lean a little towards the resto mod/pro touring part as well. Depends on what my current customer wants at the time. That's my favorite part of the market. Look stock, go fast, and go modern.

Like I said earlier on, $3,000.000.00 for any car, is NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But, maybe this little thing will be an inspiration for us to get the 'Average Guy's Car Show' off the ground. Who knows, maybe something we feature on our show, will someday show up at Barrett-Jackson
