C5/C6 Rear Brakes Conversion now available...

I just spoke to Tobin from www.kore3.com about a rear C5/C6 conversion kit for LT1 f-bodies that he had been developing for some time. It's not listed on the website yet (the parts just came back from the plater) but they are available for order. Until now, AFAIK this is the ONLY corvette brake upgrade available for the stock rears on our cars.

Here's a link to their drum-in-hat e-brake kit for reference:
http://www.kore3.com/proddetail.php?prod=10277

The rear brackets, like the fronts allow for upgrading to C6 Z51 or Z06 brakes. For those of you who don't know Tobin or Kore3, they rock. I did an entire Z51 brakes setup for my '81 with his kits and expertise and I couldn't be happier.

How much did the whole thing cost you for everything?

I didn't go with the e-brake setup on my '81 but here's a parts/source/cost breakdown:

1. Rear brakes install kit (Kore 3) $125.00
2. Front Brakes Install kit (Kore 3) $135.00
3. Delco Rear Calipers (Thepartsladi eBay) $133.95 pr
4. Delco Front Calipers (Thepartsladi eBay) $187.00 pr
5. 3rd Gen Hubs, Studs and Bearings (ebmiller88 Nastyz28) $110.00 pr
6. Rear Z51 Abutments 88964167 (GM Parts Direct) $73.30 pr
7. Front Z51 Abutments 88964166 (GM Parts Direct) $74.82 pr
8. Front Z51 Rotors 89060328 (GM Parts Direct) $106.24 pr
9. Rear Z51 Rotors 89060329 (GM Parts Direct) $129.24 pr
10.Front Caliper pin boots 12530703 (GM Parts Direct) $13.32
11.Rear Caliper pin boots 12530703 (GM Parts Direct) $13.32
12.Rear Caliper Pins 12530698 (GM Parts Direct) $20.24
13.Front Caliper Pins 12530697 (GM Parts Direct) $15.92
14. Front Ceramic Brake Pads (Kore 3) $69.50 pr
15. Rear Ceramic Brake Pads (Kore 3) $50.00 pr

Total for all the parts is $1,256.85 but if you shop around you can always find a better deal.

Bonzo's right about the wheels, though. The bare minimum for Z51 brakes is 17" wheels (and that's with some minor grinding to the front caliper). They do make 17" rally's so you can keep the car's look but that's gonna add to the cost obviously.

You got to watch the big rally rims – I hear clearance is not great on many of them. At least the steel ones.

I do not see master cylinder or prop valve in the list, so add $$ for that. Or lines/line adapters, or hoses. I don’t see their install kits listed on their site, so I do not know what is included. Got links to those kits?

So from 15” stock today to big wheels/tires/brakes, it sounds more like to $3000 to $4000.

Al, ‘brake’ out the checkbook.

Bonzo, the master is a $40 Mopar manual conversion that already has a good front/rear split. Or for power brakes you can go the S10 master route.

The Kore3 kits come with all of the hoses, hardware and adapters. My rear end builder was actually impressed with the completeness of the kit and the fact that everything actually fit together. No mismatched SAE and metric threads, no banjo fittings with the wrong bends etc.

Here's the link:
http://www.kore3.com/proddetail.php?prod=10107

The rotors, calipers etc. is all extra but the base kit IS the install kit.

As for the wheels, depending on your tastes it can be expensive or not. Tommy's (67lemanster) steelies setup with some good Kumho ECSTAs was like $800. My wheels were $415 and my tires were $650 so that's an extra $1065 for a total of about $2300 for brakes, wheels and tires.

Good link, I didn't find that. I wouldn't buy that; those with manual transmissions need an ebrake - which adds more.

Ugh, steel wheels. You need the extra brakes to stop them. You can't go by Tommy, he ain't normal. Plus you had to buy spacers, right? - $300.

You need an adj. prop valve. Which is cheap. Every car is different, and if I am dumping $2500 into it, $40 for adjustibility is a fly speck.

It ain't cheap!!! Just cheaper then equivalent aftermarket!!

Man you're a tough customer! I don't need an e-brake on the '81 because it's a collector vehicle (no inspection) and ít's an auto.

Kore3 does make an e-brake kit (the link from my first post).

Yes, I have spacers but that's because I wanted corvette wheels. Even factoring in the spacers, the set of wheels ran me about $700 which is still chump change for aluminum wheels.

Also, I'm not against a prop valve. If I need one I will definitely pick one up, just wanted to test the stock split on the master first.

And finally, who said anything about cheap Cheap would be the 1LE setup and a junkyard WS6 rear. It's LESS expensive than the big name kits only because it uses stock parts that are cheaper than aftermarket but it's still pricy and not for everyone.

Figure 1300k for the brakes...its really not THAT bad. thats large 13+inch brakes in front, large 12.5 brakes in rear.
As for the wheels, they were going to be an addition later on down the line.

1300k? As in $1,300,000? Holy Jesus! Forget discs! You could afford space shuttle retro boosters for that much.
