emissions test for classic cars?

I know QQ plates negate the need to ever step foot near an inspection station, but i want to drive my car where and when i please. Don't really want to carry a list of shows in the area that day, etc, etc. Certainly not DD it but with no mileage restrictions on my insurance i do plan to drive it on most nice days. Also i work odd hours on a nontraditional work week so its not uncommon for a Wednesday morning coffee run because that could be my Saturday!

I have normal plates at the moment was told i have to get it inspected within 14. Since all Jersey does is emissions testing now, would i just flat out fail or is there consideration for the cars age and original lack of factory emissions garbage.

I don't know with the current program but the prior program had different margins depending on the vehicle to an extent. You can't go in there cammed etc and think you'll be good. Don't expect to have to meet a little hondas standards either. Your best bet is to get friendly with your neighborhood private inspection facility and go from there.

You need to have the factory emissions stuff in tact. so what, like a PCV system and a vapor canister? lol

Which isn't there - path of lease resistance just points to the QQ but i hate the idea of more rules.

ah ok. I'd seriously just throw QQ plates on it. I don't think they really pry too much about mileage and such like that

My gf dded her car on qq plates for 5 years. Even got pulled over a few times, no issues. I dded my 71 el camino for a while with qq plates, no issues. Got pulled over in that too for something dumb and all he said was nice car, never got hassled for it.

My ins company states I can occasionally pleasure drive the car, occasionally take it to work, and have 3000 miles a year. Never had issues during the day or even late at night. Car is a 72 camaro that's loud as hell

no one checks up the the QQ plate status, as long as you do what your insurance company says then youre golden

For QQ, there is NO testing/ inspection*. modified, stock ,ect.

Just did a few this week, just need pictures of car as requested, insurance (Any will do. Doesn't have to be collector. State doesn't care as long as you have insurance. ), and 25 yrs or older vehicle.
Done.

* Assuming car is clean title and not salvaged, rebuilt, ect. NSRA does inspection which helps provide peace of mind for you and potential buyers.

1971 cars have no cat and are very light on emissions - not like 80's and 90's cars that would now qualify for QQ plates due to the 25 year rule.

There is no visual inspection (like CA) for emissions equipment - if you have a car with a computer - they plug in. So if you pass emissions (and anything your year has no computer), you should have no worries.

There is visual tamper and cat inspection.

They need to open the hood to get a visual tamper and I have never been subject to that ever - not even for older cars that would not pull codes if emissions parts are removed (like my 84). Never seen any cars at the inspection station with their hoods open.

Maybe I'm special?

Keep in mind too that highly modified cars will not be issued QQ plates from the state. If you have a tubbed Pro Streeter with a blower through the hood and wild paint, it def ain't going over! Check the guidelines out, they are almost looking for a bone stock ride.

This is really important!

I remember they gave Polar Bear **** for an RS front end on his 73- they swore it was not stock. They will hassle for a lot of things now.

Under the current inspection process there is no visual beyond if the car is equipped with cats that can be seen by the under body camera. The current process is tailpipe/plug in and gas cap check only. Any other visual defect can technically be stopped if the inspector deems it unsafe, but most likely they won't even point it out to you.

Example, my 93 Olds 88. Massive exhaust leak, emissions plugged off, but not showing a code (ok, really the SES light just may not have had a bulb), 4 bald tires on obviously bent wheels, brakes so bad that i can't imagine the guy didn't notice when he pulled it forward, but all they did was check the tailpipe and slap a sticker on it. Scott, Mike, Justin, and a few others had the pleasure of seeing this fine automobile, it looked unsafe from across the parking lot and DMV didn't give the slightest s***

True test will be when my bird goes through with a cat welded into the y pipe, AIR/EGR deleted, rear O2s deleted... lol. From what I can tell 96+ they just look for a cat, and plug a scanner in. OBD1 they actually sniff test for emissions (they rev the piss out of my 92 dakota). nothing related to OP though since his car is pre-cat
